Infant or Toddler with Parent (6 mos. - 3 yrs.)
This class helps infants and toddlers six months to three years old become comfortable in and around the water. The participation of a parent or adult guardian in the water with the child is required. Infants should be able to sit up on their own before taking this class. This class is not designed to teach children to become good swimmers or to survive in the water on their own. This program gives parents information and techniques to help orient their children to the water and to supervise water activities safely. Swim diapers are required for all infants and toddlers.
Location: Leisure Pool
Pre-School (3 yrs. - 5 yrs.)
Designed to help children three to five years old feel comfortable in shallow water, this class focuses on water safety and provides an introduction to basic swimming skills. Examples of skills taught include blowing bubbles, opening eyes under water, and front and back floats (with or without support). There are no prerequisites for this class. Parents have one of the following options:
Option 1 - Pre-School with Parent: Parent works directly with the child in the water under the guidance of an instructor in the water.
Option 2 - Pre-School without Parent: Parent observes from poolside while the child works directly with the instructor.
*Factors to consider in selecting an option include the parent's preference and comfort level, the child's level of comfort in the water, and the child's willingness to work directly with the instructor without his/her parent In the water. To determine the best approach, parents considering Option 2 are strongly encouraged to have their children participate in a pre-test. There is no fee for the pre-test and advanced registration is not required.

There are five levels of the progressive American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program; so that each child may maximize their learning it is important that they be enrolled in the correct level. The proper level may be determined in either of two ways:
1. Parent may provide documentation of the most recent American Red Cross swim class successfully completed by the child, or
2. The child may participate in a swimming pre-test prior to class enrollment. During the pre-test, the child enters the water with an instructor and is asked to demonstrate water skills with which he/she is comfortable. Skills may range from blowing bubbles (Level 1) to swimming 25 yards front crawl (Level 5). There is no fee for the pre-test and advanced registration is not required.

Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills - Leisure Pool
This course marks the formal beginning of the Learn-to-Swim Program. Participants learn beginning water skills which they will build on throughout the program. Some skills taught include front and back floats, opening eyes under water, and flutter kick.
Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills - Leisure Pool
Level 2 classes enable participants to achieve success with fundamental skills that include front and back glides, rhythmic breathing (bobs), ability to swim on front 15 feet with simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions, and finning or sculling on back with flutter kick. These are the basic foundations for future strokes.
Level 3: Stroke Development - Keating Aquatics Center (Lap Pool)
The objective of this level is to build on the skills learned in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice. Participants are introduced to front crawl, back crawl, treading water, diving, safe diving rules, and elements of the butterfly stroke.
Level 4: Stroke Improvement - Keating Aquatics Center (Lap Pool)
This level develops confidence in the strokes learned thus far and improves other aquatic skills. Participants increase their endurance and improve their skills by swimming front crawl and back crawl for greater distances. Participants also continue to build on butterfly and are introduced to elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and turning at the wall.
Level 5: Stroke Refinement - Keating Aquatics Center (Lap Pool)
The objective of this level is to coordinate and refine strokes. Participants work on refining all strokes and increasing their distances. They also learn front and back flip turns.
