Student Affairs and Services The Center for Community Engagement connects the University of Cincinnati and the community through service.    University of Cincinnati Logo

The Adopt-A-Grandparent program links students at the University of Cincinnati with a local independent living resident, "adopting" them as a grandparent.  It provides students with a sense of appreciation for the elderly while caring for others.  It also provides social interaction for the grandparents by creating a relationship with a younger generation.

The program will be in conjunction with Scarlet Oaks Retirement Community and the Center for Community Engagement.  Scarlet Oaks believes that, "no matter what makes a place a home, our residents find it [here.] Residents relax in the quiet charm of our 48-acre wooded grounds or enjoy being part of a vibrant community of friends."

What to Expect:
Students will be assigned to a grandparent chosen by the retirement community.  Students will maintain an ongoing relationship (throughout the academic school year) through a number of activities that foster a connection between the two individuals.

Student Commitment:
Students are expected to visit with their assigned grandparent at least twice per month.  Transportation via carpool will be coordinated through the Center for Community Engagement.

Activities Include:

    • Watching movies (Tuesday and Thursday movie days)
    • Reading books
    • Talking/reminiscing
    • Arts and Crafts
    • Personal grooming (paint nails, braid hair)
    • Parties (ex: holiday, birthday, etc.)
    • Any other activities that allow residents and students to spend time together

Expectations
Students must be respectful of their grandparent and their personal space. Students must also notify when they will miss their visit. Students must have a genuine interest in working with the older population.
