Psychiatry Residents

Medication is an effective treatment for depression, mood swings, anxiety, sleep problems, attention deficit disorders, and other conditions. It may be used alone or in combination with counseling. For many conditions, people benifit most when they receive both counseling and medication.

We have psychiatric residents available at the Counseling Center to prescribe and monitor medication for our clients who are in active treatment with one of our counselors. Students are referred to her by their counselor when an evaluation for medication is indicated by particular symptoms.

Students should plan in advance for how their medications will be managed when they are no longer in treatment at the Counseling Center. We will assist our clients in exploring such other options as using their primary care physician or finding a psychiatrist in the local communtiy.

The first appointment with our psychiatric residents last one hour. Subsequent appointments are scheduled for a half an hour. The fee for each visit is $60. Most insurance companies will pay for these visits, but they may be included, along with counseling, in the total number of mental health sessions covered for the year. For students with Student Health Insurance, the co-pay is typically $12 per visit.

Our psychiatric residents have limited time at the Counseling Center. It is very important that you keep your scheduled appointments. If you do not give us at least 24 hours notice of a cancellation, we must charge a $25 fee. We cannot bill your insurance company for this charge, and we reserve the right to discontinue further services until the overdue fee is paid or a payment plan is arranged.
