Turner History

The University of Cincinnati Division of Student Affairs and Services, Department of Student of Life, Office of Ethnic Programs & Services - Darwin T. Turner Scholars Program was established in 1976 following the efforts of former State Senators, William Mallory and William Bowen and the late State Representative, James Rankin.

Twenty academically talented students of color from Cincinnati area high schools participated in the first program which was known as the Minority Scholars Program. In 1991, the name was changed to the Darwin T. Turner Scholars Program in honor of Dr. Turner who was an outstanding humanitarian, leader and scholar.
In 1985, Robert Meacham, former Director of the Office of Ethnic Programs and Services, implemented the Business and Industry Council which has been responsible for raising nearly a million dollars for the program. Needless to state, the Program has been very successful.

Currently, there are 128 academically talented students enrolled in the program.  Throughout the year, the Darwin T. Turner scholars participate in programs and activities to ensure their success at the University of Cincinnati.
The Darwin T. Turner Scholars Program has been responsible for producing many students who have become some of the world's outstanding citizens and professionals.
