UC has partnered with Cincinnati Habitat for Humanity for past six years to build affordable homes in Uptown neighborhoods adjoining our campus. Each year UC students, faculty and staff work alongside a family dedicating hundreds of hours to building a home. The University and the Center for Community Engagement remain committed to offering opportunities for students to be part of this wonderful volunteer experience.
We have accomplished a great deal over the past six years. Each year we raise about $75,000 for all the materials and supplies to partner with Habitat to build a home. Fifth Third Bank has been generous in providing significant financial help for the past six homes.
While UC is not sponsoring a home this academic year, our student volunteers are demonstrating that our commitment continues toward this vital partnership to build community by building homes. The Center for Community Engagement has received a number of calls from enthusiastic students who want to get involved with the UC/Habitat for Humanity partnership, so here’s how: please consider signing up through the Cincinnati Habitat website: www.cincinnati-habitat.org and click “Get Involved!” There are still Saturday house builds throughout Cincinnati that could use UC student manpower. The Center for Community Engagement will continue to work with Habitat in announcing particular weekend house builds that could use your help.
We are also excited that CCE will sponsor alternative holiday and spring break trips this year to work on Habitat projects in Alabama. Furthermore, we continue to explore how to build student leadership on Habitat builds in the community by developing site and crew leaders to guide other volunteers and a new student group dedicated to affordable and sustainable housing.
UC and CCE will continue to work closely with our local Habitat chapter and other chapters in the United States so that you can be part of “Habitat” experience. Keep checking back at this website for regular updates.
