If your family is interested in tailgating before the game, please join us on Sigma Sigma Commons. Although our tent is at capacity, there are food and beverage vendors on Sigma Sigma Commons.

If you have recently joined the UCPA or have recently renewed your membership, expect to receive a new membership card in the mail. If you have recently joined/renewed AND have ordered tickets for Parents Weekend, your membership card will be in your Parents Weekend ticket packet, available for you or your student to pick up Tuesday, November 3 – Friday, November 6 in Swift Hall, Suite 702 from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.
If you attending the football game vs. UCONN on November 7 for Parents Weekend please note that the kickoff time has not yet been announced. We have had quite a few questions about why there is not a start time yet. Kickoff time is dependent on the television network that is going to broadcast the game. Games that are televised are put in specific time slots according to how desired the games will be to watch. So, the time will be determined, as we get closer, and will just depend on how well the Bearcats are doing, how well UCONN is doing, and how well all of the other teams that play that day are doing. Don’t they know that it’s Parents Weekend at UC! I know that this might complicate plans for that day, and as soon as I know what time the game is I will send an email blast.
DAAP, CECH, and the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences have all planned programming for Friday, November 6. Most of these colleges invite ALL parents to participate (whether or not your student is in their particular college). Please see the Parents Weekend page for more information about Friday’s events, http://www.uc.edu/sas/parents/ParentsWeekend_.html Additionally, there will be a Study Abroad presentation as well as an open house at the DuBois Bookstore.

The weekend of November 6-8 is U.C.’s Parents Weekend. It’s a chance to visit campus while it’s bustling with students, spend time with your student, watch the phenomenal Bearcats football team play the University of Connecticut, and enjoy a fall weekend in Cincinnati. See http://www.uc.edu/sas/parents/ParentsWeekend_.html for more information.
This year, the College of Arts & Sciences is pleased to host a lecture and reception for all parents and students during Parents Weekend. All parents and students are welcomed to particpate in this event. A&S Assistant Professor of Anthropology Kenneth Tankersley will present “Exploring Ancient Cincinnati: Hands-on Archeology at the University of Cincinnati” on Friday, Nov. 6 in 309 Braunstein Hall from 4:30-5:15 p.m. This multi-media lecture and demonstration will feature opportunities for audience participation. Immediately following the lecture there will be a reception with McMicken College Dean Valerie Hardcastle just inside the Braunstein lobby.
We hope you can join us for this special occasion.
About our speaker: Tankersley, an archaeologist with interests in ancient sustainable planned landscapes, has conducted archaeological investigations across North America and Eastern Siberia and is the author of approximately 100 publications. His work has been featured in numerous newspapers, magazines, documentary films, and radio and television broadcasts, including NOVA, the National Geographic Channel, the History Channel, the Animal Planet, Scientific American, the Wall Street Journal, and All Things Considered, and was highlighted this summer in the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/23/science/23cherokee.html).
He also conducts a Midwest Archeological Field School at Shawnee Lookout Park every summer, allowing undergraduates to excavate archaeological sites and receive class credit while they do so. Check out the Youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVZPd1R0xtk) to see some of the things they learned this past summer.
F.Y.I. for Parents of Freshmen
Now (or during Parents Weekend) is a great time to discuss expectations for the Thanksgiving Holiday. For many families, this will be the first time that their student comes home since they have started at UC.
Susan, the Parent of a University of Cincinnati Alumni tells a story about her son, Chris, and their first Thanksgiving with Chris away at school. Susan missed Chris to pieces and was so excited that he would be coming home for Thanksgiving. She had his room ready, supplies to make his favorite Thanksgiving dishes, and the entire extended family would be joining them, ready to hear all about Chris’s new life at UC. Three days before Thanksgiving Susan called Chris to set up a time to pick him up. At this time Chris informed Susan that he was planning on going to Hilton Head for Thanksgiving with a friend and the friend’s family. Susan was devastated. However, looking back she realizes that she had all of these expectations of how Chris’s first Thanksgiving back would be. Chris, on the other hand, had expectations of his own.
This story is a great illustration of why it is so important to have these discussions in the next couple weeks. Other important items to discuss might be the rules you expect your student to follow when they return home. Your holiday will probably be much more enjoyable if you are not arguing about curfew, car use, parties, etc. Have those conversations now!
