Current Events Honors and Awards:
The Program is very pleased to announce that our distinguished alummnus, Dr. Jennifer Ostrom (Ph.D., 2001), has been named as the Arizona School Psychologist of the Year October 2003. She was nominated for the award by the school psychologists in her school district and school staff. Dr. Jennifer Ostrom has been a School Psychologist at the Tempe Elementary School District since 2002. She has spent the last two years working in two elementary buildings serving diverse students with diverse needs. Approximately 30-50% of the students are considered English Language Learners (with Spanish as the primary language) and most receive free or reduced lunch with a student mobility rate of up to 70%. One of her schools, Carminati, is a full inclusion school and students with mild and severe disabilities are served in the general education classroom. Jennifer continues to provide outstanding service contributions. Arizona is not nearly as far along as Ohio in regard to the implementation of the intervention process, so her skills in this area have been highly valued by fellow psychologists and the staff members in her schools. Dr. Ostrom has worked on the district's committee that developed standardized intervention procedures district-wide and has spent a great deal of time training other district psychologists as well as teachers and staff members in her schools the intervention-based assessment process. She serves on the intervention teams in both of her schools, has done a great deal of training in the area of curriculum-based assessment, and has facilitated the first CBM norming in the district at one of her elementary schools. She also consults with the English Language Learning Department and Indian Education Department in the Tempe Elementary District on using CBM to evaluate their programs, and the progress of their students receiving intervention support.
The Program is very pleased that one of our very distinguished alumnus, Dr. Markay Winston (Ph.D., 1996) has been named as a Distinguished Alumna of the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Service for 2003. Dr. Winston will be honored in events Homecoming Weekend October 25-26 2003. Dr. Winston currently is Director of Student Services for Cincinnati Public Schools. In this capacity only one year, she already has begun key efforts to improve services for students with disabilities and fully integrate special education within general education. She has already re-organized the Student Services office, conducted strategic planning within the district to be consistent with overall goals for the district, conducted coordinated training for principals, special services staff, and others, and enhanced positive visibility for the district by collaborating nationally and presenting CPS initiatives to the Urban Special Education Collaborative. In prior work, Dr. Winston has been a school psychologist in the Princeton City Schools, incorporating and leading many innovative practices there, including school-wide peer mediation and intervention-based services. She also is extremely active in the Greater Cincinnati community, including long-standing work with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and her community-oriented sorority. Dr. Winston is simply a stellar individual in every way, and the Program is extremely proud that she has been honored by the College!
Dr. Amy Murdoch (Ph.D., 2003) received the prestigious Garvin Dissertation Award, a college-wide competitive award for the outstanding dissertation of the year. The award is based on a blind review by a college-wide faculty of nominated dissertations. Amy's dissertation, titled "Evaluating an Intervention Program Designed to Improve Early Literacy Skills by Increasing Child and Teacher Engagement in Activities," was chaired by Dr. David Barnett. Amy continues to make excellent research contributions with her work with Cincinnati Public Schools and is a valued partner in many Program activities. The Program is very proud of her accomplishments and joins the College and University in congratulating her for this outstanding achievement! Distinguished Lecturers:
Dr. Jeff Grimes, a national leader in school psychology and co-editor of the well known publication Best Practices in School Psychology , spoke with students and faculty on campus May 19, 2004. In his address, Simple and Sensible System Work , he discussed a framework for thinking about system level work and emphasized the role of school psychologists in educational reform. Earlier that day, Dr. Grimes provided the keynote address titled "Excellence and Abundance" at the Partnering for Progress Celebration sponsered by Southwestern Ohio Special Education Resource Center. Many students and graduates from the UC School Psychology Program also attended this conference along with school psychologists from the area and leaders from the Ohio Department of Education, Office for Exceptional Children.
