Funded Research Opportunities in School Psychology
Educational innovations. The School Psychology Program has been awarded a grant to examine educational innovations based on a state-wide competition among top doctoral programs across Ohio universities ($175,000 over 3 years). Titled 3 Rs: Revitalizing Educational Reform, Researching Effective Approaches, and Reforming Accountability, the key ideas are to study educational interventions in line with science-based practice, innovations in progress monitoring, and intervention-based decision making. These are major features of national reforms in education and special services that follow from effective intervention services to children and the model of practice taught in our School Psychology Program. Project Co-Directors: Dr. Dave Barnett and Dr. Janet Graden; research roles for all faculty.
Early intervention. The University of Cincinnati has been awarded a four-year federal research grant to assist Head Start teachers and children in meeting learning challenges. The project is called ACT 2: Active Curriculum Training-Accelerated Child Outcomes ($800,000 across 4 years). The grant will include classroom observations of instruction, consultations with teachers, and novel ways to engage children in performing curricular progress measures. The grant is a collaborative effort between area Head Start programs, and researchers in Early Childhood Education and School Psychology. Project Research Director: Dr. Dave Barnett
State Improvement Grant. The University of Cincinnati has been awarded a one-year grant of $477,000 to coordinate the evaluation of the Ohio State Improvement Grant in special education. The grant will include: extensive analysis of statewide outcome data; development of 'best practice' guidelines for professional development, selection of scientifically based improvement strategies, and implementation of progress monitoring systems; direct evaluation of school districts who are implementing reading improvement strategies; coordinating the evaluation of such projects in more than 20 school districts; and evaluating the activities of other universities who have projects to improve the capacity of Ohio to serve students with behavior problems, visual impairments, and hearing impairments. Project Director: Dr. Ed Lentz
