Why Does UC Need to Collect Social Security Numbers (SSN)?

For a student to receive a cash award at the UC Science & Engineering Expo or to advance to the Ohio Academy of Science State Science Day, the student’s social security number must be provided. UC is subject to the federal tax laws that require information to be filed for payments made to individuals. The UC Science & Engineering Expo cash awards are considered by the IRS to be taxable income. UC is required by law to provide an individual’s social security number in filing the 1099 form. The University of Cincinnati is subject to fines and penalties if a payment is made without reporting it to the IRS. If you would prefer to provide the student’s social security number over the phone, to discuss this in more detail with someone at the University of Cincinnati, or to inquire about documentation of this requirement, please call 513-556-4433 or e-mail ucsciencefair@uc.edu.
