Susan Carlson is Field Service Professor at the School of Social Work at the University of Cincinnati. Her fields of special interest include the treatment relationship, the interface between academia and practice, eating disorders, self psychology, adolescents, and marital and family therapy.

At the School of Social Work, Professor Carlson manages the MSW Field Instruction program and oversees the BSW Field Instruction program. She teaches the MSW Field Instruction Lab class and the Seminar on Current Practice in Social Work for Advanced Standing MSW students. She also teaches some summer quarter elective courses, most recently Eating Disorders: Assessment and Treatment. Professor Carlson teaches the orientation workshop for new field internship supervisors and teaches continuing education seminars for field internship supervisors such as Effective Supervision: Issues in the Supervisory Relationship, Ending with the Student, and Teaching Social Work Values and Ethics in Field Instruction.

Professor Carlson is a frequent professional workshop presenter, and has presented on a wide variety of practice topics, such as the treatment relationship, self disclosure, empathic communication, action methods in treatment and eating disorders. She has extensive clinical practice and consultation experience with a variety of social service agencies in the mental health practice area. Professor Carlson has served on boards and committees of various professional associations including the National Association of Social Workers, The Ohio Clinical Social Work Society, The Cincinnati Center for Self Psychology, and The Midwest Consortium of Field Education Directors.

Professor Carlson is a graduate of The Ohio State University with a BS in Social Welfare and received her MSW from Hunter College School of Social Work, City University of New York. She has been a faculty member at the School of Social Work at the University of Cincinnati since 1988.
