Gary Dick is Associate Professor at the School of Social Work at the University of Cincinnati. His fields of special interest include fatherhood, family violence, child welfare training, instrument development, homeless veterans, intimate partner homicide, group work, and individual, family and group treatment. 

At the School of Social Work, Professor Dick teaches courses in research methodology, practice evaluation, diversity, generalist social work practice, and social work practice with individuals, families, and groups. Professor Dick has extensive clinical and administrative experience with social service organizations such as the Children's Home of Cincinnati and the Amend Program at the YWCA, and provides training for the Ohio Child Welfare Training Program and the Ohio Human Service Training System. 

Professor Dick has published in the areas of instrument development, fatherhood, self-esteem, and domestic violence, and has trained extensively in domestic violence, crisis intervention, fatherhood, and family and adolescent therapy. Professor Dick has several research studies in various stages of development.  Dr. Dick completed a study on “Intimate Partner Homicide in Hamilton County: 1996-2007”; has completed the “Paternal Engagement Study”, testing the psychometric properties of a new scale to measure father’s involvement with their children; and is currently in the process of researching “Homeless Veteran’s and Domestic Violence”; “PTSD and Homeless Veterans”; and “Homeless Veteran’s and Their Fathers”, in collaboration with the VA Medical Center.  Dr. Dick was the researcher on a UC 21 Initiative collaborating with Beech Acres Parenting Center, Clermont County Child Enforcement, and the Clermont County Domestic Relations Court, examining the effectiveness of an alternative sentencing program for fathers who have failed to pay child support.

His community service activities include serving as a trainer for multiple social service agencies in the Greater Cincinnati area, including the YWCA in Cincinnati, Every Child Succeeds, Catholic Diocese Children’s Home, ACT, Hamilton County Juvenile Court, and many other social service agencies in Cincinnati.  In 2007, Professor Dick presented at three statewide conferences in 2006-2007. Professor Dick has served the University as an Assessor for the Cincinnatus Scholarship Competition, serves on Faculty Senate, and is a member of the Advisory Committee on Service Learning. Professor Dick serves the School of Social Work as Chair of the Evaluation Committee, and is on the RPT Committee, Curriculum Committee, and the BSW Committee. Additionally, Professor Dick is on the dissertation committee of a doctoral student in the Counselor Education program in the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services.

Professor Dick is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a BS in Criminal Justice and received an MSW from University of Illinois, Jane Addams College of Social Work. He received his PhD from The Ohio State University, College of Social Work. Professor Dick has been a faculty member at the School of Social Work at the University of Cincinnati since 1985.
