Ruby Lipscomb is Assistant Professor at the School of Social Work at the University of Cincinnati. Her fields of special interest include cultural competency in social work practice with families across the lifespan, cross-cultural perspectives on oppression, African American children’s resiliency and academic achievement, family intervention, and women's support groups.
At the School of Social Work, Professor Lipscomb teaches courses in Human Behavior and the Social Environment–Individuals, HBSE–Small Groups & Families, Social Work Practice Methods, Interventions with Children, Adolescents and Families, and Human Diversity. Professor Lipscomb also taught social work at The Ohio State University, Central State University, and Ohio University. She has clinical and supervisory experience with various social service organizations including Franklin County Children’s Services, Model Cities Human Resources Mental Health Center, the Community Action Agency New Careers Program in Columbus, Bethune Center ’s Unwed Parents Program, and St. Stephen's Community House.
Professor Lipscomb has published and presented extensively in the areas of race, ethnicity, and women’s issues in social work; aging in the African American community; diversity issues in mental health and aging in rural environments; the relationship between ecological factors and educational attainment among African-American high school seniors; and, the role of the school social worker in the educational achievement of African-American students. She has received awards from Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Talladega College Alumni Association, Worthington Alliance of Black Parents, the Michigan Center for African American Aging Research, and the Council on Social Work Minority Fellows Program. Professor Lipscomb is active in many organizations having served on boards and committees of the National Black Family Summit; the Southern University Race, Class and Gender Association; the Martin Luther King Women’s Service Board; and, St. Stephen’s Community House.
Professor Lipscomb is a graduate of Talladega College, Alabama in sociology and secondary education. She received an MSW and a PhD from The Ohio State University, School of Social Work. Professor Lipscomb has been a faculty member at the School of Social Work at the University of Cincinnati since 1998.
