Ruth Anne Van Loon is Associate Professor at the School of Social Work at the University of Cincinnati. Her fields of special interest include aging, physical health and disability, issues across the lifespan, end of life issues, and program and practice in aging and health care settings.
At the School of Social Work, Professor Van Loon teaches courses in social work practice with individuals and families, social work practice in gerontology, social work practice in health care, and human development across the life span. She also taught at the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago. Professor Van Loon has extensive direct practice experience in the areas of hospice care, mental health, and rehabilitation.
Professor Van Loon has published and presented in the areas of health care for uninsured workers, assessment and intervention of terminally ill patients, and adaptation to motherhood for women with AIDS. Community service activities include volunteering as an LISW supervisor for agencies who have none on staff and acting as a consultant to home health care agencies as they work to improve their social services to clients. Professor Van Loon has facilitated funded research projects including an exploratory study of health care needs, experiences, attitudes, and beliefs of uninsured workers for the Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati and is a co-principal investigator for an evaluation of the HOPE VI Community and Support Services program for the Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority.
Professor Van Loon is a graduate of the University of Michigan where she also received her MSW. She received her PhD from the University of Chicago, School of Social Service Administration. Professor Van Loon has been a faculty member at the School of Social Work at the University of Cincinnati since 1996.
