Master of Social Work Program
The Master of Social Work (MSW) program prepares you for a career in advanced social work practice.
Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission, you must have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. For more information see admission requirements.

Curriculum Requirements
To earn the MSW, you must complete 90 quarter credit hours of classroom and field instruction. You must also maintain a 3.0 grade point average with two-thirds of the grades “B” or higher. Find out more about the theory behind the MSW program curriculum.
Students with BSW degrees may receive exemptions from some required MSW courses. Find out more about this exemption policy.
In some cases, prior graduate credits you earned may be counted toward your MSW degree. Find out more about the advanced standing, transfer credit, and waiver policies.
Areas of Concentration
As an MSW student, you must choose to concentrate in one of these areas:
- Direct Practice prepares you to work directly with individuals, families and small groups. If you choose this concentration, you must elect specialized study in one of these areas:
- child and family services,
- health and gerontology, or
- mental health
- Social Welfare Administration prepares you for administrative staff and managerial positions in social welfare agencies.
You can also apply for admission to our Specialized Mental Health Program, which prepares you to work as a clinical case manager or community support system developer with persons with major mental illness and their families.
Courses of Study
When it comes to courses of study, the MSW program is highly flexible. Depending on your current level of education and personal situation, you can choose to take from one to four years to complete the MSW program. You choose from these courses of study:
