Master of Social Work Curriculum
The Master of Social Work (MSW) program curriculum has four components:
- a first year foundation that provides basic theoretical and practical knowledge and skills used in social work;
- a second year concentration in administration or direct practice;
- specialized study areas in child and families, mental health, and health and gerontology for direct practice students that provide the opportunity to develop expertise in an area through related courses; and
- field instruction that gives students the opportunity to develop and apply the intervention skills associated with their concentration.
In the first year, foundation curriculum students acquire knowledge and skills in five professional foundation areas: human behavior and the social environment; social welfare policy and services; social work practice; research; and the field practicum.
In the second year students concentrate in either administration or direct practice. This approach equips students with the knowledge base necessary to perform in a variety of settings and job classifications and with knowledge in a specialized area of practice.
