Each month of the academic year, the university is recognizing a UC scholar-athlete who has demonstrated success both in the classroom and in an athletic arena. To be eligible for the award a scholar-athlete will have completed 2 years of education at UC, have a defined major, a cumulative grade point average (or GPA) of 3.2 or better, be in good standing, and have achieved athletic success.

“UC is pleased to recognize scholar-athletes from across the university who stand out both academically and in athletic competition. Their dedication, competitive fire and ability to balance the demands of classroom, athletics and life serve as an exemplary model for every student,” states President Ono.

“I am proud of our outstanding men and women student-athletes who balance practice and class schedules on a daily basis, molding them into masters of time management. The collective GPA of our student-athletes stands higher than that of the overall student body,” remarks President Ono.

On behalf of UC, I am honored to announce that the university recognizes Matt Ring as the UC Scholar-Athlete of the Month for April. Matt is a pitcher on the UC Men's Bearcat Baseball Team. He is an outstanding competitor on the field and a leader in the classroom with a 3.6 GPA majoring in Sports Administration in the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services.

“All of us at the University of Cincinnati applaud Matt on his achievements and wish him continued success.”

“With a GPA of 3.6 and his solid performance as a baseball star, Joe Scherpenberg continues to prove that scholarship and athletics do go ‘hand-in-hand.’ His dedication to excellence during our meets and in class is a model for all of our student-athletes,” affirms Mr. Babcock.

Each UC Scholar-Athlete of the Month is awarded a clock during the Athletics Recognition Banquet in the spring. Additionally, a tribute to each scholar-athlete is made by the university during home games of each active sport during the month.
