Named to the 2012 D1 Men’s Academic All-Ohio Team, Peter Jannelli, a midfielder for the Men’s Bearcat Soccer Team, maintains an impressive 3.5 grade point average. His determination to tackle obstacles on the field and in the classroom scores him the title of UC Scholar Athlete of the Month for August.
As one of the two students who played over the summer in the United Soccer League’s Premiere Development League, the top-level men’s amateur soccer competition in the United States, Peter Jannelli makes UC proud every time he steps on the field. In 2009, he played in five matches as a freshman while posting a goal and an assist in his first career appearance in their 5-0 win against Canisius. He also saw 50 minutes of action in two matches including the BIG EAST contest against Syracuse on October 31. As a redshirt sophomore, Jannelli started in 16 games and saw action in 18. He made an assist to DeNormandie, which led to the 1-0 victory over Drake on August 24 and finished the 2012 season with eight shots on goal.
Jannelli shares that being a student athlete is a big deal. It gives the student more pride for being at UC since the athletes are on campus and around student activities all day. Student athletes wear the C-paw with pride and carry it with them everywhere they go. “For me, being a bearcat means giving one hundred percent effort in anything you do. It is also going above and beyond representing yourself while trying to be well respected among the community and doing everything to the best of your ability.”
“Balancing school and athletics is probably the hardest thing a student athlete does throughout their college career,” Jannelli admits. “For me, it’s all been about planning out my day and eventually figuring out a set schedule.” His advice for future student athletes is to never just go through the motions and hope for the best. Every day and every week needs to be planned to have the most success.
Son of Peter and Linda Jannelli, he was two-time all-county and all-league selection at Springfield High School in Springfield, PA. Scoring 18 career goals with 15 career assists, he was named the league’s top offensive player as a senior and helped lead the squad to district semifinals during his senior season.
Jannelli is currently studying finance in the Lindner College of Business. After graduation he plans to continue his soccer career or his education in graduate school at UC or back in his home state of Pennsylvania.
