The vision statement from the University of Cincinnati Success
Challenge Campus Plan indicates that UC will use the Success Challenge Grant initiative
to address significant retention infrastructure issues, to introduce best practices
of retention developed at other institutions, to develop innovative practices to meet
unique UC needs, and to support the efforts of faculty and staff in the engagement
of students with the curriculum and co-curriculum. The overall goals of the University
will be to involve faculty and staff in the development of an initiative that will
call on collaboration and cooperation to ensure students' seamless transition through
the institution toward success. This initiative will be research based and will rely
on assessment and evaluation to determine effectiveness.
The Success Challenge initiative focuses on at-risk students, which UC defines as
follows:
-
First-year students, those in their first year at the University, whether freshmen
or transfer.
-
Transition students, those who will be moving from one college to another at UC, including
the "pre" students.
-
Undecided students, those who enter the University uncertain about their major.
-
Financially needy students, those with financial need.
-
Academically pressured students, those who are marginally prepared when admitted or
who are on academic probation.
Those who have more than one of these characteristics will be more at risk.
The 3 primary goals of Success Challenge are, retention, academic success, and progress
toward/timely graduation.
