Elementary & Middle School Students

College-Conservatory of Music (2017 dates)

CCM Preparatory and Community Engagement offers a wide range of performing arts and music programs suitable for elementary and middle school students at the College-Conservatory of Music on the UC Uptown Campus and theatre arts programs at Cincinnati Country Day School (Indian Hill) and Mt. Washington School (Mt. Washington) as well as music camps at Kings High School (Kings Hill) and The School for the Creative and Performing Arts (Over the Rhine).

Future Stars

June 5-9, 9:00am - noon or 1:00pm-4:00pm, Ages 3-6

Each day of this playful camp, future stars will make believe, twirl on their toes, march to the drum and learn about the performing arts all while having fun. Acting, dancing, music making and singing will be taught by our talented and experienced CCM Preparatory faculty.

CCM/SCPA Suzuki Summer Strings Camp at The School for Creative and Performing Arts

June 12-16, 9:00am - 4:00pm, for students in K-6 grade with previous Suzuki experience

Practice your instrument, gain new friends and have fun learning and reviewing skills and songs while improving your technique! Best for area Suzuki string students currently studying Pre-twinkle through Book 4. After camp care is available from 4-5 p.m. for a nominal fee.

Acting 101

June 12-16, 9:30am - 4:00pm, ages 7-14

Have fun while learning the skills necessary to start acting with style. Students explore character development, improvisation, scene work and movement that will culminate in a performance of improvisation and scripted scenes.

Camp Bravo at Mt. Washington Elementary School

June 19-23, 8:00am - 2:00pm, ages 7-14

Prepare yourself for applause, cheers and rave reviews with our musical theater camp.  Acquire the skills to become a triple threat with acting, dance and voice classes taught by the professional teaching artists of the CCM Preparatory. Take a bow at the concluding performance! Lunch is included at this location.

Jazz Explosion at Kings Hill High School

June 19-23, 8:00am - 2:00pm, ages 7-14

Working in both big band and sectional rehearsals, this week long program will not only share information about jazz styles and improvisation, but can give each student an opportunity to develop self-confidence and gain valuable musical skills.

Camp Bravo at St. Thomas Episcopal Church

June 26 - June 30, 9:00am - noon, ages 7-14

Have fun while learning the skills necessary to start acting with style. Students explore character development, improvisation, scene work and movement that will culminate in a performance of improvisation and scripted scenes. Lunch is included at this location.

Youth Classical Guitar Workshop

July 10 - July 14, 9:00am - 4:30pm, ages 7-12

The Youth Classical Guitar Workshop is a unique opportunity for classical guitarists to participate in a 5-day workshop designed to help them improve and explore different aspects of their skills. Classes and activities will include guitar ensemble, music theory, jazz and baroque improvisation, composition, games and special topics classes, as well as daily solo and group performances.

Camp Curtain Call at Cincinnati Country Day School

July 10 - July 22, 9:00am - 3:00pm, ages 9-15

“We’re off to see the wizard!” and hope you will come along too! Mornings at Camp Curtain Call will be dedicated to rehearsing for our summer production of The Wizard of Oz, Jr., enhanced by afternoon master classes to develop young performers' theatrical skills and knowledge. This program is for students with theatre experience. Auditions are required. Lunch is included at this location.

“Once Upon a Time…” Storytime Ballet Camp

July 17-21, 9:00am-noon, ages 5-8

Get ready to dance in our popular and fun ballet camp that introduces students to traditional story ballets. Each day includes a related craft, videos of the ballets and a daily ballet class focusing on basic ballet vocabulary and technique.

Centerstage!  

July 31 - August 12, 9:00am - 3:00pm, Ages 9-15

With an emphasis on acting, this camp allows actors to learn all aspects of a play performance – designing the costumes, sets and lighting! Auditions are required.

Middle School Day Camps

This camp is designed for students in grades 6-8. The camp begins June 6-10, 2016. There are morning, afternoon, of full-day options available.

 

2D Workshop/3D Workshop for Middle School Students

  • Morning: 2D Workshop
    Explore two-dimensional art and design by creating, drawing, coloring, and writing comic strips in various styles (the sky’s the limit). In this session students will learn the history, various techniques and current practices in creating visual narrative story-telling by focusing on their own imaginative creations.
  • Afternoon: 3D Workshop
    Explore three-dimensional art and design by creating and building futuristic machines (such as: space vehicles, submarines, airplanes, smart buildings, anything one can think of!) In this session students will learn about how to turn dreams into reality by going through the steps to design, blueprint, and build prototypes for the machines of tomorrow.
Summer C.A.M.P for Middle School Students

Camp dates are July 10-16, 2016

Cincinnati Architecture Mentoring Program or C.A.M.P. is a day camp open to middle school students. The goal of Summer C.A.M.P. is to foster an interest in architecture and increase diversity within the architecture profession.

Ballet Classes

Encore Advanced Chamber Orchestra

June 12-16, 9:00am-5:00pm, Ages 12-22

Talented string students will rehearse and play great literature for string orchestra and soloists. Each day, students will participate in sectionals, orchestra, master classes and enrichment activities. Auditions are required.

Ballet Intensive Study

June 12-30, 9:30am-1:30pm or August 7-11, 5:15pm-8:15pm, for advanced students Levels 5-7

These sessions offers a comprehensive training program for young men and women specializing in ballet technique, pointe, battiere, pas de deux, repertoire, variations and modern dance in a state-of-the-art facility. New students are required to audition.

Voice Workshop: Summer Arts Immersion for High School Students

June 18-July1, for students entering grades 9-12

Students will work in Master Class settings with CCM voice and drama faculty, CCM Preparatory faculty and professional vocal coaches to develop a healthy vocal delivery, strong interpretation, language skills and physical freedom in their singing. Optional private lessons are available. Auditions are required. Housing is available for out-of-town students.

Musical Theatre Workshop: Summer Arts Immersion for High School Students

June 18 - July 1, for students entering grades 10-12

This program is designed for rising high school sophomores through seniors who have a strong interest and passion for musical theatre. It encompasses voice, dance and acting components taught by conservatory faculty and local professionals as well as the members of the CCM Preparatory faculty. Auditions are required. Housing is available for out-of-town students.

Acting Workshop: Summer Arts Immersion for High School Students

June 18 - July 1, for students entering grades 9-12


The High School Acting workshop is an intensive two-week program where students study movement for the actor, stage combat, the Sanford Meisner technique, practical acting skills, rehearsal process, professional demeanor, audition technique and acting as a career. Housing is available for out-of-town students.

Band - Making of a Music Major: Summer Arts Immersion for High School Students

June 19 -23, for students entering grades 9-12

Are you considering becoming a music major in college? Regardless of whether you want to be a performer or teacher, this is the program that can help you develop the skills needed for admission to your dream school. In addition to high quality instrumental ensemble experiences, we will help you get ready for becoming a music major.  Housing is available for out-of-town students.

Jazz Academy: Summer Arts Immersion for High School Students

June 26-30, for students entering grades 9-12

CCM Jazz Academy offers an outstanding experience to study jazz performance with professional musicians in a variety of settings. Daily ensemble rehearsals will be augmented with classes in jazz theory, jazz arranging, improvisation, and jazz listening, as well as Master Classes with guest artists and faculty members. Placement auditions are required. Housing is available for out-of-town students.

Summer Arabic Language Program

June 19 - July 14, 9:00am-3:30pm, Monday-Friday

Learn Arabic this Summer at the University of Cincinnati Summer Arabic Language Program for Beginners. This program is open to any motivated high school senior, rising senior, or rising junior with a minimum GPA of 3.5. The course provides students with an introduction to the Phonology, Script, and Basic Structures of Modern Standard Arabic, Spoken Arabic of the Levant, Guest speakers and field trips. The program and books are 100 percent funded, leaving no cost to the student. Students will earn 5 semester hours of college credits upon successful completion.

Architecture & Interior Design

Do you love buildings, inside and out? Are you interested in designing structures and interior spaces? Then the Architecture & Interior Design DAAPcamp is the perfect place for you to be this summer! This camp, designed to introduce you to Architecture and Interior Design, mixes hands-on design projects, field trips to local firms and interesting buildings, plus individual attention from UC faculty, all while giving you a taste of college life. So join us, and create a unique experience exploring the worlds of Architecture and Interior Design.

Graphic Communication Design

See this fantastic poster? What about those amazing title sequences for the latest, coolest movies out there, or even that cool logo on that new magazine you carry around everywhere? Graphic Communication Designers made them all. GCD combines type, image, symbols, color, sound, and motion to bridge the world between people, messages, and ideas. Join us at the Graphic Communication Design DAAPcamp this summer to tour award-winning design firms, and to learn from DAAP faculty just how to use the tools of design to make your own 2D and digital media projects.

Industrial Design

Industrial Designers are innovators and communicators who are skilled at understanding user needs and translating this knowledge into new product and vehicle concepts. Professionals in this field focus on making the world a better, easier-to-use place. Students will improve their drawing skills, learn design procedures involved in creating and marketing innovative and useful products, and develop design concepts. This camp provides an introduction to the industrial design profession, and first-hand experience developing the core skill-set required to become and industrial designer.

Fashion Design

You like fashion—We Are Fashion! Think you have what it takes? Only those with heart and soul need apply. Being able to make people feel beautiful and look beautiful is an art form that only few can do. Take the risk follow your heart. Come and spend one week in the Fashion DAAPcamp and begin YOUR design legacy…DAAP! We are fashion!

Studio Art

Do you want to learn to translate your ideas into art? If so, come join the Studio Art camp to engage in a range of art practices exploring the endless possibilities of fine arts. Everything from drawing, to painting and sculpture, to new digital technologies are at your fingertips! Discover the world of creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression that art generates. Campers will create a body of work for a college preparatory portfolio and learn to communicate personal ideas through contemporary art practices.

Shoe Design

“I was sad because I had no shoes. Then I met a man with no feet.” Design! Who doesn’t get excited about design?! Shoes! Who doesn’t get excited about shoes?! Well, if you are excited about either one, this camp will probably put you over the edge. You will be working with professionals from shoe design companies all over the United States, like Adidas, AND1, Jordan Brand, Nike, TOMS, Under Armour, and Vans to name a few, and will learn a great deal about a unique and polarizing product we call footwear! You will leave this camp with more design tools for your creative toolbox, along with a new-found perspective on design and the Footwear Industry. So, tie your shoes and let’s get going!

Business of Fashion Day Camp for High School Students

Your interest in the world of fashion and retail goes beyond the average “fashionista”... you take this seriously! You are the “go-to-person” when someone needs to put together that perfect look. You feel AT HOME in fashion retail stores even when you aren’t shopping for yourself. The business of fashion and style fascinates you and you can see yourself buying for a department store, trend forecasting, owning your own boutique, being a fashion blogger or journalist or photographer, or working as a stylist - just to name a few ideas! This new day camp is for you!

Digital Fabrication Day Camp

If you like to make things, you will like 3D printing. In the past 5 years, designers have made remarkable use of the new 3-D printers for design prototyping. New designs for plastic toys, appliances, medical devices, automobiles, packaging and containers can now be fabricated directly by the designer! Designer-makers are also using 3D printing to manufacture new one-of-a-kind parts for specialty motorcycles, as well as custom made sunglasses and shoes. Artists are using the 3D printing technology to create their sculpture masterpieces. If you want to experiment with the computer and the 3D printer to make things, come use the Rapid Prototyping Lab at DAAP!

The Art of Sewing Camp

Sewing is a lost art! Come join us for a week-long adventure where you will learn everything you need to know about creating your own fashions with a sewing machine. You will learn the early stages of creating ideas just like designers do when they come up with a clothing line. Next steps are cutting out patterns and sewing the fabric together to create your own look! You may bring your own sewing machine, or machines are also available to use, and can be purchased with a discount. Learn on the machine you will take home! This camp is for girls and guys!

Drawing Intensive Camp

Whether your passion is graphic design, architecture, interior design, fashion, animation, or any wider range or related design disciplines, excellent hand drawing skills will be your constant companion. How and why do we see what we do? What is the shape of light? How can we find a reliable likeness between our drawings and our subject? Excellent drawing skills rely on answers to these important questions and more, all of which emerge from a shared graphic language that is at once inherited from the past, relevant today, and indispensable to your future as a design professional. This camp will help you prepare a competitive portfolio application and will change the way you see the world around you!

Growing The Future City Day Camp

Are you interested in growing, managing, or designing with landscape plants? Growing food in the city? Improving the environment through the intelligent use of plants? The world is recognizing the value of horticulture to the quality of life in urban environments through innovations such as green roofs, living walls, rain gardens, urban agriculture and more. By studying plants on the award winning U.C. campus landscape and around the city, we will discover how plants create the livable cities of the future!

From week-long day camps to multi-week residencies and even elective classes, our summer programs offer students of all ages the opportunity to work with our world-class faculty, along with renowned guest artists, all while at the state-of-the-art CCM Village.

Choral Conducting Master Class & Workshop

July 10-14, 2017

Led by Katalin Kiss, professor of musicianship and conducting at the Kodály Institute of Liszt Academy of Music, Hungary, the master class and workshop will focus on a comprehensive approach to studying choral repertoire including gesture, score study, vocalization and musicianship skills. Repertoire will include choral works by Bartók, Kodály, Orbán, Kocsár and Ligeti.

Continuo: Harpsichord & Cello

June 5-7, 2017

Keyboardists and cellists will study Baroque chamber music and continuo playing with Michael Unger (harpsichord and organ) and Adriana Contino (baroque and modern cello). Students will participate in group performance classes on Baroque technique and interpretation; seminars on Baroque performance practice and continuo technique; and solo chamber music coachings.

Opera Bootcamp

July 8-30, 2017

CCM Opera Bootcamp is an intense and dynamic program designed to develop career skills for conductors and singers alike. If you are an aspiring, industrious, and fearless conductor, singer, pianist, coach or stage director, we want YOU! In just three weeks, we will mount two opera productions (Gianni Schicchi and Les mamelles de Tirésias) and one program of staged Mozart scenes and arias, all with orchestra, all in original language (both French and Italian language instruction will be offered to support the assigned repertoire).

You will grow, you will learn, you will work, you will have fun, and you WILL improve!

Orff Schulwerk

July 17-28, 2017

This approach to learning, developed by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman, builds musicianship through singing, playing instruments, speaking, moving and improvising. Active music making is the core of this philosophy, supporting both conceptual learning and affective development of children. Children who regularly improvise and create their own music and movement are uniquely prepared to solve problems in many other contexts.

Level I teacher education course is open to teachers who have earned at least a bachelor's degree in music education as well as undergraduate seniors pursuing a degree in music education or music performance (previous Orff chapter workshop attendance is recommended).

Level II course is open to those who have completed an AOSA-approved Level I course.

Level III course is open to those who have completed an AOSA-approved Level II course.

Playwrights Conference

June 12-17, 2017

Aspiring and experienced playwrights alike can spend a week immersed in the creative process at the nationally ranked and internationally renowned UC College-Conservatory of Music. Write, interact with industry professionals and hear your work read aloud by CCM’s resident actors. The culminating festival shares your workshop plays in a public performance. CCM Playwrights Conference offers two different tracks: Development and Fundamentals. The Development Track is for participants who already have a play that they would like to work on during the conference. The Fundamentals Track is for participants who would like to learn the nuts & bolts of playwriting.

 

College of Arts and Sciences

Experiential summer classes open to non-credit-seeking students.

The College of Arts and Sciences goes outdoors this summer with experiential (hands-on) classes in Archaeology, Biology, Geography, and  Geology.  Offered for college credit to our students, these courses are also open to the general public at a greatly discounted cost without college credit.
