Frequently Asked Questions about CLEP

What is CLEP?

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a nationally recognized credit-by-examination program that allows you to receive college credit for what you already know by earning a qualifying score on any of the 33 introductory-level college subject examinations. The exams fall under five categories: History & Social Sciences, Composition & Literature, Science & Mathematics, Business, and World Languages.

When are CLEP tests given?

CLEP exams are offered daily, Monday-Friday. CLEP appointments are limited, however, and we cannot guarantee you a spot until you schedule an appointment. We recommend scheduling at least 2 weeks in advance.

How do I register?

Register for a CLEP exam by emailing testing@uc.edu or calling 513-556-7173.

What CLEP scores do I need to receive credit?

If you are taking a CLEP test for a course at UC, you can use this key to determine which test/score you will need.

If you are taking a CLEP test for a course at a different school, you will need to contact an advisor at that institution for their CLEP policy or search for the institution on the College Board website: http://clep.collegeboard.org/search/colleges

How long must I register in advance?

You must schedule a CLEP test at least two days prior to when you would like to take it. Seats for CLEP tests do fill up, however, so it is in your best interest to schedule your CLEP test as soon as possible.

Where can I find study materials for CLEP?

We have a CLEP study guide in our office available for students to look over. More information about CLEP prep materials can be found at: http://clep.collegeboard.org/test-preparation.

When do I get my scores?

For most CLEP tests, you will receive your score report immediately after the test. CLEP will send official score reports to the institutions designated within two days of receiving the test results.

Tests which require an essay portion, however, cannot provide an immediate score. The scores will be sent to you and the selected recipient approximately 3-4 weeks after your exam.

What information will I need to provide to schedule an appointment?

We will need your name, the name of the test you will be taking, when you would like to schedule your appointment, and your email address.

How much does it cost?

CLEP tests at UC come in two payment forms and cost $100.00 total. The first payment is $80.00 and is payable by credit card or check to The College Board. The second payment is $20.00 and is payable by cash or check to the University of Cincinnati. You will pay these fees when you arrive to take your test.

Does CLEP effect my GPA?

No, CLEP scores have no effect on your grade point average (GPA). Earning a qualifying score on a CLEP test will only allow you to receive credit hours for courses, not grades.
