Please be aware that passing a CLEP test requires that you know the material covered on the test as well as you would if you had taken a quarter or semester long course, and in some cases, several courses. Regardless of how you attained that knowledge, it is highly recommended that you take time to study for your exam. If you do not pass the exam, you must wait 6 months to retake it.
College Board provides some tips and free resources for studying for a CLEP exam. Click on the item for more information
1. Find out if your college accepts CLEP. If you are a UC student, click here to see how CLEP is accepted at UC. If not, use the CLEP college search function found here, or check with the Registrar's office at your school.
2. Read a description of each of the 33 exams here, and decide which one to take
3. STUDY. Click here for some information from CLEP about preparation tips, creating a study plan, and free test questions. You can also purchase a test prep guide for $10.
4. Come prepared for test day. You must bring two forms of identification to take your CLEP test. One must be government-issued and unexpired (driver's license, passport, etc.) and the other must contain your name and either a photo or signature (credit card, student ID, work ID, etc.) You must also bring your two forms of payment ($80.00 by check or credit card to College Board and $20.00 by cash or check to UC).
Some colleges and universities provide free online courses covering a variety of topics. While not directly related to a CLEP exam, you may find a free online course that covers the topics found on that test. The Online Education Database provides a list of university "Open Course Collections", which lists free courses, podcasts, videos, or other course related materials from schools like Duke, Columbia and Carnegie Mellon Universities.
In addition to those resources, these websites offer free and fee-based test material for CLEP. Neither College Board, the University of Cincinnati, nor Testing Services promotes or is affiliated with these test prep companies, and they are listed here for reference only. While the companies themselves may claim guaranteed results, neither UC or Testing Services takes any responsibility for test scores received as a result of using or purchasing this test prep material.
