Update for August 2007

I had the privilege of joining several of your colleagues Monday as the Ohio Board of Regents announced that they would be awarding two Ohio Eminent Scholars positions this year—both to UC. This is quite an achievement and I’d like to congratulate Bill Heineman, PhD, and Tom Mantei, PhD, both in the area of nanobiosensors, and Awatef Hamed, PhD, in advanced propulsion and power systems. They were instrumental in preparing the accepted eminent scholar applications.

Recruitment for these two new positions will begin soon. Read more

As always, we welcome your feedback and encourage you to check out research.uc.edu for the latest research news and announcements.

Sandra Degen, PhD
Vice President for Research

NEWS/GRANTS
Galloway Named Associate VP for Research

Debi Galloway, director of Sponsored Research Services (SRS), has been promoted to associate vice president for research, effective July 9, 2007. Over the past three years, Debi has been instrumental in the consolidation of the two sponsored research offices on the East and West campuses and, together with her staff, has just recently completed the implementation of the Coeus system for tracking pending and active grants to the University of Cincinnati. In her new role, Debi will continue to direct SRS as well as sponsored program accounting. Combining the supervisory roles for these two offices makes Debi responsible for grant administration pre- and post-award. Karen Sullivan, associate vice president for university budget management, will continue to be responsible for government cost compliance.

Summer Undergraduate Research
Summer undergraduate research opportunities drew more than 150 students to UC’s campus this year, with many still on campus wrapping up research projects in preparation for end-of-the-summer poster sessions. The programs—several of which are sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health—provide undergrads the chance to work one-on-one with faculty and other student researchers in some of UC’s most active laboratories and research facilities. Learn more about undergraduate research programs at www.uc.edu/ucresearch/undergraduateresearch.html.

Clean Energy Alliance
This past spring, UC signed on with the University Clean Energy Alliance of Ohio (UCEAO)—a team of 15 universities dedicated to fostering an alliance for clean-energy research and awareness. UC is represented on this consortium by Paul Bishop, professor of civil and environmental engineering and associate vice president for research. The group is currently working to finalize by-laws and will be selecting a chair early this fall to replace current interim chairman Jack Bantle of Wright State University. Look for information about the Clean Energy Alliance in future editions of Update, and read more information about the initial UCEAO agreement at www.uc.edu/news/NR.asp?id=5688.

New Grants Awarded in July
Writing winning grants is tough. We understand the hard work that goes into preparing a proposal and want to make sure that effort doesn’t go unnoticed. Check out your great work—and that of your colleagues—at

SPOTLIGHT
Dan Woo, MD
An active stroke researcher, Dan Woo, MD, also serves as medical director of the Post-Approval Monitoring Program—a committee he created as the university worked to meet the requirements of Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP). Woo received his medical degree at UC and completed an internal medicine internship and neurology residency at Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He then returned to UC for a fellowship in cerebrovascular disorders and subsequently joined the faculty of the department of neurology. He has been named to Cincinnati Magazine’s “Best Doctors” list and to the listing of “Best Doctors in America.” In 2004, the American Heart Association honored Woo with the Robert G. Siekert New Investigator in Stroke Award. The associate professor of neurology is director of cerebrovascular genetics, studying acute treatment, prevention and genetic epidemiology of stroke. Woo has published and presenting findings on a familial link to hemorrhagic (bleeding) stroke and the use of statins for lowering stroke risk, and has identified African-Americans to be at double the risk of hemorrhagic stroke compared with whites of the same age.
