Update for July

Following three years of rigorous work, the University of Cincinnati has received a full, three-year accreditation from the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP).

The accreditation ensures protections are built into every step of research—from study design and selection of research sites and investigators, to the actual conduct of research and collection and interpretation of data.

In addition, it signifies systems are in place to verify that these protections are, indeed, genuine and that they are backed by policies, procedures and practices that guarantee the highest standards at every turn.

I want to personally thank all those involved in the accreditation process. Your hard work is appreciated.

As always, we welcome your feedback and encourage you to check out research.uc.edu for the latest research news and announcements.

Vice President for Research

NEWS/GRANTS
Living Well Consortium

The University of Cincinnati Board of Trustees last week approved UC’s entering into an unusual consortium agreement that will link faculty and students with corporations seeking new product and service innovations for people aged 50 and over. This new business-university model is called the Living Well Consortium. Read more at
http://www.uc.edu/news/NR.asp?id=5999.

URC Announces Second Round of Interdisciplinary Grant Awards
The University Research Council (UCR) has awarded five grants—each totaling approximately $25,000—through its spring Interdisciplinary Grant competition. The intent of this program is to bring faculty together from across the university to work on an interdisciplinary research project that will result in applications to federal granting agencies. Forty-three proposals were submitted from 150 faculty representing nine of UC’s 16 colleges, including allied health sciences, arts and sciences, business, CECH, DAAP, engineering, medicine, nursing and pharmacy. Pediatric faculty working through Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation were also represented. View all project titles and winners at
http://www.uc.edu/news/NR.asp?id=6023.

Coeus Update
About 4,300 awards and 10,500 proposals have been loaded into Coeus from the Sponsored Research Services (SRS) legacy data tracking systems. The legacy information, plus new data for fiscal year 2007, is currently posted in Excel format on the SRS Web site at http://www.srs.uc.edu/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.PrelimDataLink. Web-based forms will be posted later this summer, making it easier to search for proposal and award information.

Compliance Matters
The Office of Research Compliance and Regulatory Affairs (ORCRA) will begin distribution of a quarterly e-newsletter this month. The publication will include news from each compliance unit, a spotlight on a specific program or compliance news item, information about upcoming compliance events and training opportunities and quality improvement tips for investigators. Look for your copy of Compliance Matters early next week.

New Grants Awarded in June
Writing winning grants is tough. We understand the hard work that goes into preparing a proposal and want to make sure that effort doesn’t go unnoticed. Check out your great work—and that of your colleagues—at

Federal Demonstration Partnership Summary
In May, Debi Galloway, executive director of Sponsored Research Services, and George Uetz, PhD, professor of biological sciences, attended the Federal Demonstration Partnership (FDP) meeting. The FDP is a group of nearly 100 research universities and federal funding agencies working together to streamline research administration. A meeting summary can be downloaded at

SPOTLIGHT
Radiation Safety Committee Chair Glenn Talaska, PhD

UC’s radiation safety committee is an integral part of the research process—overseeing research studies involving radioactive materials. Leading that committee is fellow researcher Glenn Talaska, PhD, professor in the environmental health department. Now in his sixth year as committee chair, Talaska specializes in industrial hygiene, genetic toxicology and carcinogenesis. A graduate of the University of Texas Medical Branch PhD program in genetic toxicology, he completed postdoctoral work at the National Center for Toxicological Research in Jefferson, Ark. Talaska is a member of the American Academy of Industrial Hygiene and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, for whom he serves as vice chair of the biological exposures indices committee, recommending workplace exposure limits.

Talaska is committed to finding solutions for cutting back on greenhouse gas emissions and reducing dependence on foreign oil. To do his part, he is a member of the Cincinnati Cycle Club and commutes by bike to and from work. He recently participated in the Commuter Challenge—a competition between bicycle clubs in Cincinnati and Dayton—and in the process biked over 3,800 miles. Read more.
