Update for May 2007

As a member of UC’s research community, it’s important that you know who’s working with you—and for you! I think Update is a perfect venue for telling you a bit more about those who have a vested interest in your research career. We’ll periodically shine the spotlight on various Office of Research staff and committee members—many of whom are your research colleagues and peers. We’ll begin this month with the Institutional Review Board medical and social/behavioral chairs. Read more about Julie Gerlach and Michael Linke, PhD, in the spotlight section below. And look for others from the research office in future editions of Update.

As always, we welcome your feedback and encourage you to check out research.uc.edu for the latest research news and announcements.

Vice President for Research

NEWS/GRANTS
Grant-Writing Workshops a Success
More than 350 people attended the series of grant-writing workshops offered in April. Participants included faculty from 12 of UC’s 16 colleges. Evaluations of the sessions have been incredibly positive, and we’re currently identifying faculty who will participate in a one-on-one intensive workshop this summer. The following is a breakdown of participation for each program:

   Writing Biomedical Publications—127
   Write Winning Grants—127

   NIH K Awards—64
   NSF Career Awards—38

Solar House Rising
For many months now, University of Cincinnati students have been laying the groundwork in terms of design, engineering and business planning in order to build a solar house. Part of the international Solar Decathlon competition, the final house—which will be completely solar powered in every way, including sun-powered house mechanics and appliances—will be built in four sections on the beds of four mobile home trailers located on the UC campus. When complete in October, the sections will be transported to Washington DC, connected together, and then displayed on the National Mall along with 19 other solar houses from around the world. More than 200 students from UC’s business, design and engineering colleges—as well as journalism students in arts and sciences who are covering the house building—are participating in this project. Stop by and check out their progress in front of UC’s Braunstein Hall.

Transgenic Registry
The Office of Research Compliance and Regulatory Affairs (ORCRA) will establish a Transgenic Registry for transgenic animals at UC. The registry will serve to make sure UC is in compliance with the National Institutes of Health Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA. But it will also be a resource for researchers, since it will be a searchable database for investigators interested in learning more about transgenic resources at the university. All animals should be registered. View and complete the registry forms at http://researchcompliance.uc.edu/biosafety/transgenicreg.html.

Please note the form has two sections—one required and one optional. The optional section is important for providing information for the searchable database. Once completed, the database will be secure and password protected. If you have questions or problems, contact Melissa Colbert, ORCRA director, at (513) 558-5034, or Rob Anderson, director of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, at (513) 558-5171.

New Grants Awarded in April
Writing—and winning—grants is tough. We understand the hard work that goes into preparing a proposal and want to make sure that hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. Each month, we’ll list the newest grant award winners on the research Web site. Check out your great work—and the work of your colleagues—at http://www.uc.edu/ucresearch/new_grant_winners.html.

SPOTLIGHT
IRB Chairs Julie Gerlach and Michael Linke

UC’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) is responsible for protecting the rights and welfare of human subjects who are recruited or otherwise participate in research conducted under the auspices of the university. The nature of the IRB’s work requires that its members be well acquainted with human research and study design. Read more about the two leading the IRB charge at UC:

Julie Gerlach, chair of the social/behavioral section of UC’s IRB, received bachelor’s degrees in nursing and microbiology and a master’s in public health from the University of Florida, Gainesville. She spent a year studying in the department of epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University, where she focused on epidemiology and biostatistics in epidemiologic research with an emphasis on survival analysis, clinical trial design, survey design and chronic disease, infectious disease and genetic epidemiology. Before being named to UC’s IRB, Gerlach served on the IRB for Schulman Associates and as a regulatory affairs coordinator for Medpace Inc. She has held research, consultant and epidemiology positions with Vermont Department of Health, Vermont Program for Quality in Health Care, Procter & Gamble and UC’s emergency medicine department.

Michael Linke, PhD, leads the medical section of UC’s IRB. He received his PhD in pathology and laboratory medicine from UC and, from 1993 to 1995, was a postdoctoral fellow in the pulmonary biology division at Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation. Linke is currently a physical scientist at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center and volunteer assistant professor for UC’s College of Medicine. He has served on UC’s IRB in various roles since 1994 and is currently a member of the VA’s human research oversight committee. He and his colleagues are published broadly on the pneumonia-causing Pneumocystis carinii. Linke received certification from the NIH Human Participants Protection Education for Research Teams and the Department of Veterans Affairs Good Clinical Practices.
