Update for October 2007

Collaboration is key to growing our research excellence. I’m happy to report that collaboration among researchers in engineering and medicine has resulted in a $9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

The award funds the Point-of-Care Center for Emerging Neuro Technologies—a resource hub for UC and national researchers who need help with any stage technology development geared toward early detection of neurologic emergencies.

Led by Fred Beyette, PhD, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, with coprincipal investigator and professor of neurology Joseph Clark, PhD, the center is a perfect example of how working together—combining our resources and expertise—will grow research at the University of Cincinnati.

Read more about the Point-of-Care Center.

As always, we welcome your feedback and encourage you to check out research.uc.edu for the latest research magazine, news and announcements.

NEWS/GRANTS
Ohio Announces Programs to Support Research
The Ohio Innovation Partnership (OIP) Program—a state initiative designed to recruit scientists and students into the STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) disciplines—has issued a call for proposals for the first of its funding opportunities. The Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program, with a budget $100 million over two years, will offer scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $4,700 each to universities for student recruitment. Tony Perzigian, PhD, senior vice president and provost for baccalaureate education, is leading this effort at UC. A request for proposals for the OIP’s second funding opportunity—Research Scholars Program—has not yet been issued.

University Research Council Announces 2007–08 Funding Opportunities
The University Research Council (URC) is now accepting applications for its Faculty Research Support Grants. The program will award up to $6,500 in financial support for faculty research programs, especially for those in the initial stages of developing a line of research or scholarship. Successful applicants are expected to present records of prior activity that indicate a devotion to scholarship and the potential for high-quality achievement. UC faculty members are eligible to apply. The deadline is Nov. 2. Details about the first round of Interdisciplinary Grant funding will be announced Monday, Oct. 8. Look for more information in your inboxes. For more information about all 2007–08 UCR grant opportunities, visit
www.uc.edu/ucresearch/funding_opportunities.html.

Research Orientation Series Begins Friday
UC’s research orientation series—designed to introduce faculty, staff and students to the various research offices at UC—will begin on Friday, Oct. 5, with a presentation by Sandra Degen, PhD, vice president for research. Degen will offer an introduction to research at UC from 9 to 10 a.m. in the Faculty Club Conference Room on the Varsity Village eighth floor. The research orientation series provides helpful information to investigators as they work to run a more efficient research program. In order to reach a greater portion of the UC community, many of the 2007–08 orientation sessions will first be presented at Varsity Village, and then repeated in Rieveschl Auditorium. For a full listing of 2007–08 orientation series programming, visit uc.edu/ucresearch/research_orientation.html. The research orientation series is sponsored by the Office of Research. For more information, e-mail Linda Minton at

Research Committees Posted to Web
It takes the help of many at UC to make sure research offices and programs are running smoothly. Many faculty and staff work behind the scenes to provide information, advice and guidance to the Office of Research, to assure compliance with regulations governing research, and to develop educational programs. See who’s part of the Office of Research’s 12 committees and councils at uc.edu/ucresearch/Research_Committees.html

New Grants Awarded in September
Writing winning grants is tough. We understand the hard work that goes into preparing a proposal and want to make sure that effort doesn’t go unnoticed. Check out your great work—and that of your colleagues—at http://www.uc.edu/ucresearch/new_grant_winners.html.

SPOTLIGHT

Research Integrity Officer Melissa Colbert, PhD

In 2006, the United States Public Health Services published a new rule on research misconduct, making significant changes to the definition of misconduct, guidelines for data sequestration, record retention and evidentiary standards for determining what constitutes misconduct. They also expanded privacy protection and protections for both the complainants and respondents. To navigate these changes and handle any allegations of research misconduct at UC, the Office of Research has appointed a research integrity officer (RIO). Melissa Colbert, PhD, director of the Office of Research Compliance and Regulatory Affairs (ORCRA), serves as RIO at UC. Colbert, who is also UC’s compliance officer, is a research associate professor in the department of pediatrics and spent one year as acting executive director of the Office of Research Compliance and Regulatory Affairs at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. She oversees university-wide compliance activities for animal care and use, biosafety, radiation safety and human research protection. As RIO, Colbert is the liaison between the university and the Office of Research Integrity, keeping both apprised of progress on any research misconduct investigations.
