SUMMER GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS 2007

The University Research Council (URC) announces the Summer Graduate Student Research Fellowship Program for the Summer of 2007. As defined by the URC research includes not only intellectual activity designed to expand our knowledge and understanding of people and their environment, but also activities in any of the creative and performing arts aimed at interpreting and enhancing that environment.  The program provides summer stipend support to outstanding graduate students.  The funding is provided so that the awardee may pursue scholarly activities on a full-time basis from July 1 through August 31, 2007.

  • The stipend level is $3,000 for two months ($1,500 per month).

  • The proposed research should be that of the student, related to his/her thesis or dissertation research.

  • Awards are not for student research assistants on faculty members' projects.

  • Fellowships are competitive and each one is based on a written proposal prepared by the student and sponsored by the faculty member acting as research advisor.

  • Fellowships are limited to graduate students who are engaged full-time on their research during the period of the award.

  • The URC fellowship award may be supplemented by other funding that supports the proposed project, but competing University teaching, research or administrative assignments are not permitted during the fellowship period.

  • Students receiving URC funding for Summer 2006 are not eligible.

Please note that the number of applications submitted through each graduate program is limited, and a requirement for a pre-review by the department/college of the applicant is required.  Applications will only be accepted from the graduate programs.  Graduate Program Directors should indicate on the front of each application which one of the five subcommittees should review each proposal (Humanities & Arts, Behavioral & Social Sciences, Life Sciences. Physical Sciences or Engineering).  Departmental rankings are not to be included and are no longer part of the evaluation process.  Interdisciplinary students should submit their applications to Dr. Neville Pinto.

Deadlines for internal proposal review are set by each graduate program, but in all cases, proposals must be forwarded from each program to Dr. Sandra Degen, Vice President for Research, Health Professions Building (HPB) 250 or to the Sponsored Research Services Office, University Hall, Rm. 530 and must be received by 5:00 p.m. on January 26, 2007.

Nine (9) signed and stapled copies (transcripts and letters of recommendation must be included with each of the 9 copies) of the applications should be submitted to Dr. Degen by the deadline date and time above.  Incomplete applications or applications submitted after the deadline date and time will not be considered for awards.

UNIVERSITY RESEARCH COUNCIL
EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR THE
STUDENT SUMMER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The URC Summer Fellowship applications will be evaluated using the following three criteria:

A.  RESEARCH PROJECT QUALITY.

In judging the quality of the proposed research project, reviewers consider the following:

  1. Is the project innovative or creative?
  2. Are the goals clearly articulated?
  3. Is the project of theoretical and/or practical significance?
  4. Are important issues of project design and analysis appropriately addressed?
  5. Can adequate progress be made on the project during the Summer funding period?
  6. Are the resources needed to complete the project available?

B.  ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS.

Evaluation for this category will be made by analyzing the following elements in the application:

  1. Grade point average and coursework completed
  2. Publications (including performances and showings in the arts), presentations and invited papers
  3. Research Mentor recommendation

C.  COMPLIANCE WITH APPLICATION GUIDELINES.

To allow the review committees to equitably evaluate all applications, it is important that the application guidelines be followed. Applications lacking the required materials and signatures or providing false information will be rejected by the review subcommittee.
