Interdisciplinary Faculty Research Grants

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Definition of Research: Research includes not only intellectual activity designed to expand knowledge and understanding of people and their environment, but also activities in the creative and performing arts aimed at interpreting and enhancing that environment.

Eligibility of Applicants: The prinicipal investigators must be 80 percent FTE to full-time members of the university faculty.

Proposal Guidelines: The following must be included in the application:

  • Application Cover Sheets: Include on separate sheets of paper information for each faculty member involved in the project.
  • Biographical Sketches (not to exceed four pages per faculty member): Include name, educational background, employment history, awards and honors, and publications (last five years and earlier, representative papers) for each faculty member.
  • Listing of Research Support (past, current and pending): list all past, current and pending research support from internal and external sources of funding. Limit listing of support to the past five years. For each grant or contract, list the project title, project period and the direct and indirect funds awarded.
  • Proposal: Not to exceed five single-spaced typewritten pages (12 pt. font minimum), including tables and illustrations. References are not included in the five-page limit.  The proposal should be divided into the following sections:

    Significance
    Background
    Preliminary Data (if any)
    Experimental Design and/or Methods
    Timeline
    Innovation

Appendices may contain letters of collaborative arrangements  and equipment sharing. Please remember to write the proposal such that a panel of reviewers with diverse backgrounds can clearly understand the project.

  • Interdisciplinary Team: Indicate the contribution of each faculty member and why this team is interdisciplinary in nature.
  • Budget and Budget Justification: Indicate how the budgeted items relate to the research project.
  • Human Subjects and Animal Research: If human subjects and/or animals will be used in the proposed research project, please describe where in the IRB or IACUC process this protocol is. If approved, please attach the signed cover sheet to the URC proposal.

Deadline: April 27, 2007, by 5 p.m.

Nine stapled copies of the proposal, cover sheet, biographical sketch (not to exceed four pages from each investigator), listing of research support and any accompanying documents are to be forwarded to either Sandra Degen, PhD, vice president for research, HPB 250, or to Sponsored Research Services, University Hall, Room 530. Please e-mail Linda Minton at linda.minton@uc.edu if you have any questions.

Funding Priorities: Proposals will be evaluated primarily based on the scholarly merit of the proposed activities; the innovativeness of the proposed interdisciplinary program; the capabilities of the principal investigators; and the use of funds as "seed money" for collection of preliminary data or to demonstrate feasibility, and thereby bolstering prospects for future support from external sponsors.

Grant Conditions & Allowable Costs:

  • Any publications resulting from this research effort should acknowledge URC support.
  • Funding is available for projects for one year. Extensions may be granted if appropriately justified in writing to the chair of the URC.
  • Allowable costs will typically be those associated with successful completion of a research or scholarly project, and may include equipment, research assistant salaries or services. This URC competition does not fund faculty salary support for the academic year or recess periods. Travel to meetings or conferences is not supported. Travel that is essential to successful completion of the aims of the project is permitted. Publication costs (e.g., charges associated with reproduction of materials or obtaining copyrights) are allowable. Please note that neither indirect costs nor graduate student tuition can be charged to this research project.
