Internet Alias FAQ

What is an Internet alias?

An Internet alias is a generic pointer to an e-mail account. The University of Cincinnati's standard form for Internet aliases is FirstName.LastName@UC.Edu. If you have a popular name you may be assigned another combination of your name and then @UC.Edu.

For example, your Internet alias might be Joe.Bearcat@UC.Edu. Mail sent to that address would go to BEARCATJ@EMAIL.UC.Edu.

Please note that students are not eligible for Internet aliases.

Why should I use an Internet alias?

If you give your Internet alias as your e-mail address, you are prepared for changes. For example, if we moved your account to another system, we could change your pointer to forward messages to the new account. You wouldn't have to notify all of your contacts with a new address. When you have an Internet alias, you simply tell us of the change and we update our master file.

How can I get an Internet alias or change where my alias points?

To get an Internet alias or to change where your alias points, complete the Internet Alias Request online form.
