Reading Signed Messages  |  Eudora  |  Out of Office Messages  |  Recover Deleted E-Mail

Q:  How can I remove an invalid auto complete entry (e-mail ID) from Outlook?
A:  Bring up a new message. Start typing in the address. When it pops up in the auto complete screen, arrow down to the entry you want to remove and press delete.

Q:  Running in cached mode, how do I update my cached address book?
A:  Cached Exchange mode keeps a copy of the Global Address List on your machine. To download the new copy, select "Tools," "Send and Receive," and then "Download Global Address Book."

Q:  How do I turn off cached mode?
A:  Select "Tools," "E-Mail Accounts," "View or Change Existing e-mail accounts," and click Next. In the Outlook processes, e-mail for these accounts in the following order list, click the Exchange Server e-mail account, and then click Change. Under Microsoft Exchange Server, clear the Use Cached Exchange Mode check box. Exit and restart Outlook.

Q:  How do we configure secure POP and secure IMAP?
A:  Please see the client set up page here.

Q:  You stated that the preferred server address is UCMAIL.UC.EDU. Is UCOWA.UC.EDU going away?
A:  No, we plan to keep ucowa.uc.edu indefinitely because many people use this address and have it programmed into their smartphones. Because the same address is now utilized for many different types of access in Exchange 2007, we set up the URL, ucmail.uc.edu. All of our documentation in the future will include the ucmail.uc.edu address.

Q:  What happened to Outlook Mobile Access? (It used to be at ucowa.uc.edu/oma.)
A:  Outlook Mobile Access was discontinued in Exchange 2007, since ActiveSync was becoming increasingly usable and compatible. Most smartphones are now capable of supporting ActiveSync, either out of the box, or through a software update.

Q:  Will the ridiculously short timeouts in OWA be changed?
A:   Maybe. The Exchange 2007 version of OWA lets you make a selection on the login page of a public computer or a private computer. The timeouts for each selection are different. A 'public computer' is for when you are sitting at a computer that is not yours. It has a short timeout period to prevent someone else from jumping on to your account if you leave and forget to log out. 'Private computer' is for when you have your own computer. The timeout is longer. But on your own computer, I would suggest you consider using Outlook Anywhere. This new technology will allow you to use the full-fledged corporate Outlook client without the VPN. This will be available when your mailbox is moved to an Exchange 2007 server and Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2003.

Q:  In OWA, I am unable to read signed messages. Downloading the S-Mime client has not worked.
A:
It’s the IE7 access protection controls. When you’re on the campus network, IE7 recognizes that ucmail.uc.edu is on the “intranet” and allows it to run ActiveX controls. From outside the campus network, it’s on the “Internet,” which means it assigns security rules accordingly; this includes prohibiting some types of ActiveX controls. Adding https://ucmail.uc.edu to your “Trusted Sites” list should fix the problem.

Q:  What version of Eudora do you recommend?
A:  We no longer recommend Eudora. We recommend Outlook 2007, Entourage 2008, and Outlook Web access. These clients are robust, secure, and are best able to exploit the many features of Exchange 2007. Outlook 2007 has proven itself to be more secure than the Outlook versions of the late '90s and early 2000s. There are not incidences of viruses grabbing users' address books, anymore. You can control what goes on your calendar.

We are finding that older versions of Eudora are just not capable of connecting to the new Exchange server. We apologize for the inconvenience, but the technology has advanced and the older software just cannot keep up. Qualcomm no longer provides critical security updates or patches and will not offer ongoing technical assistance for Eudora.

Q:  I understand that with Exchange 2007 I can configure my out of office messages to go to people outside the UC Exchange environment. But I am using Outlook 2003 and cannot find that option.
A:  This option is not available in Outlook 2003. You need to configure it with Outlook 2007 or using Outlook Web access. In the Outlook Web access, click on Options on the upper right hand side of the page. On the Options page, look at the column on the left hand side. Select Out of Office Assistant. Select "Send Out of Office Replies." Enter your reply and, if you desire, set the dates you want the reply to be sent. Scroll down. Select "Send Out of Office auto-replies to External Senders" and enter in the desired text.

Q:  How do I recover deleted e-mail messages?
A:  In Outlook, select Tools, then Recover Deleted Items. In the window, select the item or items that you want to recover and click the icon (second) with the Envelope with the arrow above it. This will put the deleted e-mail back into the Deleted Items Folder.

In Outlook Web access, select Option from the top right hand side of the screen. Then select Deleted Items from the column on the left. Highlight the desired e-mail and select "Recover to Deleted Items Folder." You can then move it from your Deleted Items folder into the inbox.
