Anti-Virus Software Installation

(for Off-Campus Windows 98 machines)

This download is pre-configured to obtain updates from the UCit Anti-Virus page and is for Off-Campus Windows 98 machines. The following instructions have been written for downloading and installing McAfee version 4.5.1 software from the UCit Website on Windows 98 systems only. The install files are compressed so you will need to have software to allow you to unzip them. Make certain that no anti-virus software other than McAfee is installed.

  1. Go to the UCit Software Page:

  2. Click on “Windows and Macintosh Standard Installation”.

  3. Click on “VShield v4.5.1” for all Windows versions. Versions may vary.

  4. In the “File Download” window, click “Save” and save it to your desktop.

  5. Next download the update file. Start by clicking the back button on your browser.

  6. Click “Virus Definition Updates” at the bottom of the page.

  7. Next click “SuperDAT v4.0.#### for Windows (Engine and DAT Updates)”

  8. In the “File Download” window, click “Save” and save it to your desktop.

  9. Close you browser and if your PC is infected, disconnect it from the network.

  10. Create a folder on the desktop called “Temp” and Click and drag the “VSC451L.zip” file to that folder, release and select/click the top option.

  11. The software will unzip in the folder. Open it and double click the setup.exe.

  12. Install the software taking the defaults for the installation.

  13. Next double click the dat-####.zip file and click “Extract” at the top.

  14. Click “Extract” and in the Folder/Drivers window path over to the C:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan directory. Click “Extract”.

  15. When McAfee and the updates are installed the files on the desktop may be deleted.

  16. The software needs to be updated with the latest DAT files regularly. By default it is set to go to either UC’s update page or http://us.mcafee.com/. You can set the frequency and the time for these updates to occur.

Scanning Your System after Installing McAfee Anti-Virus Software

Once the McAfee anti-virus software has been installed and updated with the latest files, you must do a complete scan of your system to clean it. Here are the instructions for doing this:

  1. You can access the scanning function a couple of different ways:

    1. Right click the “Start” button and go up to “Scan for Viruses”.

    2. Click the “Start” button, go up to “Programs”, go over to “Network Associates” and over to “Virus Scan”.

  2. In the “VirusScan” window, click “Browse” and then open “My Computer”.

  3. Select drive “C” and any other drives that you may have defined and click “OK”.
Select “include sub folders” and “all files” and “compressed files”.

  4. Click on the “Action” tab at the top and in the “Where virus is found” drop down box, select “Delete infected files automatically”.

  5. Click the “Scan Now” button. This will initiate a system scan of drive C and it could take a while to finish. If there are other hard drives on your system, you will need to scan them and any other types of removable media such as floppy disk, zip disks, etc…

  6. The software will scan all files on the system and display a status window that shows any infected files found.

  7. When it completes, close the window.

For assistance with setting up your scan or any of the above configurations, please call the UCit Helpdesk at 513-556-4357.
