Anti-Virus Software Installation


(for On-Campus Windows 98 machines)

This download is pre-configured to obtain updates from the UCit Anti-Virus page and is for On-Campus Windows 98 machines. The following instructions have been written for downloading and installing McAfee version 4.5.1 software from the UCit Website. They may differ slightly with more recent versions of McAfee. Make certain that no anti-virus software other than McAfee is installed:

  1. Go to the UCit Software Page:
  2. Click on “Windows Pre-Configured”.

  3. Click on “VShield v4.5.1 for Windows 9x, NT4 Workstation, 2000 and XP Professional”. Versions may vary.

  4. On the “File Download” window click “Save”. Save it to your desktop.

  5. Next download the update file. Click the back button on your browser.

  6. Click “Virus Definition Updates” at the bottom of the page.

  7. Next click “SuperDAT v4.0.#### for Windows (Engine and DAT Updates)”.

  8. On the “File Download” window click “Save”. Save it to your desktop.

  9. Close you browser and if your PC is infected, disconnect it from the network.

  10. Double click the “vscan451.exe” file on your desktop and click “install”.

  11. The software will install for you.

  12. When it is finished, double click the “Sdat####.exe” and the update file will install.

  13. When McAfee and the updates have been installed the files on the desktop may be deleted.

  14. The software is pre-configured to access the UCit Anti-virus website and should update itself with the latest Anti-Virus files automatically in the future. Make certain this is the case by checking the website and comparing to your software version (right click the McAfee icon on the lower right and go to “About”.

  15. To check the level, right click the McAfee icon on the bottom right of your desktop and go to “About”. This displays the update level and date.


Scanning Your System after Installing McAfee Anti-Virus Software

Once the McAfee anti-virus software has been installed and updated with the latest files, you must do a complete scan of your system to clean it. Here are the instructions for doing this:

  1. You can access the scanning function a couple of different ways:

    1. Right click the “Start” button and go up to “Scan for Viruses”.

    2. Click the “Start” button, go up to “Programs”, go over to “Network Associates” and over to “Virus Scan”.

  2. In the “VirusScan” window, click “Browse” and then open “My Computer”.

  3. Select drive “C” and any other drives that you may have defined and click “OK”.
    Select “include sub folders” and “all files” and “compressed files”.

  4. Click on the “Action” tab at the top and in the “Where virus is found” drop down box, select “Delete infected files automatically”.

  5. Click the “Scan Now” button. This will initiate a system scan of drive C and it could take a while to finish. If there are other hard drives on your system, you will need to scan them and any other types of removable media such as floppy disk, zip disks, etc…

  6. The software will scan all files on the system and display a status window that shows any infected files found.

  7. When it completes, close the window.
