Online File Service Coming Soon!

by Don Rainwater

Have you ever needed to access some of your files from more than one computer? Perhaps you need to access files that you created on your home or office computer from a public computer lab, classroom, or other location. UCit is developing a service that will enable you to connect to your own personal file space, store files there, and retrieve them later from any computer that allows you to access the UC campus network.

The technical name for this type of service is "network-attached storage" or NAS. You connect your computer to the NAS server using your UC username and password. Once connected, you can copy files to and from the server at will. It works just like a folder or disk on your local computer.

We will begin testing the service with groups of faculty and student users during Fall Quarter. When the pilot phase is successfully completed, we will make the service available to all UC faculty and students. Our current target for this is tentatively set for Winter Quarter 2005.

If you have questions about this service, please send email to Don.Rainwater@UC.Edu.
