Bearcat Online All the Time

by Bev Upton

As a means of communicating official University information to students, electronic mail (email) is convenient, rapid, environmentally aware, and cost effective. The official student email policy and the selection of Bearcat Online for the University's official method of communicating with students reflect that.

Official Student Email Policy

In January 2004, UC's Policy on Student E-mail became effective. As a part of this policy, the University of Cincinnati issues a UC email address, a Bearcat Online email account, and disk space (for email storage) to every student, at no cost to him or her.

Since the implementation of this policy, the University's administration has been actively utilizing email in official University business processes, and has launched a communication campaign with students about the need to use their University email accounts. The "Get It! Check It!" slogan encourages students to use the system.

UC's Official Email Service for Student Communication

The University provides Bearcat Online email accounts to all UC students, and uses the system as its official means of electronic communication with students. In addition to providing normal email services, Bearcat Online lets students receive email from University offices in one reliable location. The system is easily accessible, from any computer, at http://email.uc.edu. Instructions on how to access a Bearcat Online account, and other help files, are available at the site.

Offices across campus will increasingly use email to keep students informed and updated. Email messages that students can expect to receive through Bearcat Online include the following:

  • Registration information and important dates
  • Financial aid application notices and award offers
  • Billing reminders with due dates
  • Health insurance waiver notices
  • Emergency (i.e., snow closure) notifications
  • Information on key campus events and programs

Questions about UCit Email Services?

By sending these communications to a University-provided email address, UC can avoid problems such as email providers misinterpreting University messages as spam, delays in delivery of time-sensitive information, and messages rendered undeliverable when students close accounts to change service providers.

If you have questions about a University-provided email account or the spam service, please send email to the UCit Help Desk or call the Help Desk at 556-HELP.
