Managing Spam

Spam (unsolicited, commercial or junk email) has reached unacceptable levels on the Internet. Many users of our email systems find it intrusive, annoying, and, in many cases, offensive. A large percentage of all email traffic coming into University mail servers is spam, which wastes both IT resources and the recipients' time. Users have asked UCit to do something to help control it.

Having investigated various technological approaches to this problem and as part of an evolving strategy, UCit has subscribed to a spam alert service known as Spamhaus. Spamhaus tracks the Internet's Spammers, Spam Gangs and Spam Services, provides dependable, real-time, anti-spam protection for Internet networks, and works with Law Enforcement to identify and pursue spammers worldwide. Specifically, this service identifies and tags any email that comes from an IP (Internet Protocol) address on a Realtime Blackhole List (RBL).

UCit has found the Spamhaus RBL consistently effective in tagging the majority (up to 75%) of spam destined for a UC user who has created the necessary filter on his or her email client. For a more in-depth explanation, see How RBLs Help Control Spam.

To have your spam email filtered, follow the link (provided on the How RBLs Help Control Spam page, or below) for the email client that you use for your UC email service (i.e., Bearcat Online or UCMail). The instructions will help you configure your email client to identify the incoming messages the anti-spam service will determine as potential spam. Messages identified as potential spam can either be deleted immediately or passed to a Spam or Junkmail folder, as you specify. The choice is yours.
