SmartEnforcer Now on Duty

by Ellen Davis

UCit has implemented a new process in securing the integrity and availability of the University's network. Each student owned computer that is using an Internet connection in a residence hall must be registered and scanned. The new process consists of the following steps.

1.)

Register Your Computer with ResNet Internet Sign On

  • First, you identify yourself as an employee or student of the University of Cincinnati by entering your employee or student ID and birth date.
  • When the system validates your information, you will be required to read and accept policies regarding usage of University computer resources.
  • Upon acceptance of these policies, you will provide your campus location, phone number, and email address to complete the registration.
2.)   Download, install and run the SmartEnforcer client.
3.)

Read and accept the Residental Hall IT Policy and General Use policies

4.)

SmartEnforcer Login - i.e., Allow your computer to be scanned to check that:

  • anti-virus software (McAfee, Norton, or Trend-Micro) is installed
  • Anti-virus software service is running DAT file (which contains signatures or patterns of known computer viruses) is current
  • various Microsoft OS (Operating System) patches are installed

If your computer passes the scan, you will be given access to the network.

If your computer does not pass the scan, you will need to install the Microsoft patches or antivirus software or both. You will be given the opportunity to download and install these during the SmartEnforcer login. If you need help with the registration process, call the UCit Help Desk at 513-556-HELP to make a ResNet appointment. You will need to log in to UCnet using SmartEnforcer once a month. Your computer will then be scanned for the latest Microsoft patches and antivirus DAT file.

ResNet Services, in UCit's Instructional and Research Computing division, maintains a staff of student technicians to help students who live in the residence halls configure their systems to work on the UC network (UCnet). A ResNet technician will come to your room to install a network card in your PC and configure it to work properly on UCnet.

During move-in weekend, ResNet had appointments on Saturday, 18 September and Sunday, 19 September. Now, ResNet techs have appointments Monday through Friday, only. Appointments are in 45 minute blocks, with the first appointment time at 9:30 am and the last at 3:45 pm. Call the Help Desk at 513-556-HELP to schedule an appointment.
