New Unified Messaging System Replaces Existing Voice Mail Service
by Diana Noelcke and Mark Faulkner
The University is replacing its current voice mail system because the current voice mail system has reached the end of its useful life. The existing legacy system is sixteen-year-old technology and its vendor no longer supports the hardware and software. UC's Infrastructure Technology Planning Committee provided oversight to the procurement and selection of the new system.
Installation and testing of the new unified messaging system is underway. The first phase of the implementation involves replacing existing voice mail service. UCit's transition plan gives the user community over 30 days to learn the new system. Users can set up their new mailboxes prior to converting from the existing system. The tentative dates for transition are as follow:
| User mailbox setup: |
11 October to 13 November 2004 |
Old voice mail system turned off and new unified messaging system turned on: |
14 November 2004 |
The new system provides voice mail services as well as the additional capabilities of a unified messaging platform. Customers use many different devices to communicate, such as wireless smart phones, wireless ready personal digital assistants (PDAs), tablets, and personal computers. The new system can integrate with existing central IT managed email systems (UCMail and Bearcat Online). This feature, targeted at keeping the more mobile user connected, includes the capability of using different modes of communication and different devices to retrieve voice mail messages. UCit will implement this new feature later in the academic year.
UCit will keep you informed with additional information and instructions on converting to the new system as we implement changes.
