Disaster Recovery Plans for UCit
by Tom Schimian
As systems become increasingly mission-critical and complex, disaster recovery is becoming an increasingly important aspect of enterprise computing. UCit's disaster recovery team includes representation from each of its divisions - and meets periodically with a UC Audit department rep to review UCit's Disaster Recovery procedures.
The UCit Disaster Recovery team's current activities include the following:
We have documented and distributed procedures relating to response to fires, tornadoes, and earthquakes. We have included new screens of contact information for DR in the Applix tracking system (used by the UCit Help Desk).
We are actively working on a joint effort with The Ohio State University, whereby UC and OSU will back up each other's mainframe, to facilitate recovery in the event of a disaster at either location. Significant cost savings are associated with this approach as opposed to using vendors who provide the service. This also sets the ground work for other state institutions that may eventually want to participate.
The team has begun work on a procedures document for Open Systems, as well.
We have designated room 101B of CSB as a relocation point for UCit Systems and Operations in the event of a disaster in University Hall or MSB. This room will be equipped with networked terminals. It can also house vital records.
