Users Get New Features with Exchange 2003
by Bev Upton
14 December 2004 - UCit is planning a migration of users of the Microsoft Exchange email system (UCMail) to Exchange 2003 in the next six to eight weeks. A small pilot group is testing the system at this time.
One of the major benefits of this upgrade is that we can deploy users on the Exchange 2003 environment while other users remain on Exchange 5.5. This migration strategy makes it possible for UCit to plan for deployment of small groups, and stabilize their systems before moving to the next group.
The Exchange 2003 email system comes with many improvements, including the following:
- New anti-spam features and integration with Office Outlook 2003 Safe and Block Sender lists;
- New Virus Scanning for improved antivirus solutions;
- Improved Outlook Web Access, which provides fast access to Exchange Server from the Internet with greater security. A new user interface (UI) mirrors the Outlook 2003 UI and includes new features such as a spelling checker, task lists, automatic logoff, and HTML content blocking to prevent spam and potential beacon-finding code;
- Integrated support for mobile devices;
- Improvements in email security, with opportunities for encrypting email text and using digital signatures to secure email transmissions.
To prepare for your migration to the new Exchange Server 2003 and to get the most benefit from the new features, UCit recommends that you upgrade your client to Microsoft Outlook 2003 (if you have not already done so). The University has negotiated an Enterprise Licensing Agreement for the typical Microsoft desktop products, including Outlook. You may purchase these products (on CD) for a nominal fee from the University Bookstores, or you may borrow the CDs from the University Libraries at no charge.
