UCit SmartPhone Strategy

by Mark Faulkner

Three years ago, you might have carried a pager, a cell phone, and a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) to stay connected to your business. Today, advances in technology let you replace these devices with a single smartphone. Now, you can leave the laptop at home or in the office, and conduct your business with a small device that fits in your pocket.

Smartphone technology enhances a cell phone with the capabilities of a PDA, so you can use email, access your calendar and contact lists, and perform various tasks, wherever you go. It is the way modern, mobile professionals can stay connected - without being bogged down with equipment.

UCit recently concluded a pilot with Cincinnati Bell for the Treo 600 Smartphone and we plan to initiate an engagement with Microsoft on the use of their Smartphones during January 2005. We are conducting these pilots to gain a familiarity with various technology solutions and understand the application requirements needed to integrate solutions to our Exchange email platform (UCMail).

From these findings. and with collaboration of community stakeholders, we plan to develop a comprehensive RFP for complete cellular coverage on campus and an enterprise solution for mobile messaging.

We will keep you apprised of developments
