UCit Announces Improvements in Spam Protection at UC
by Bev Upton
Many users of our email systems find spam to be intrusive, annoying, and in many cases, offensive. Spam cannot be eliminated entirely, but there are ways to manage it effectively. Over the past year, UCit has been enhancing anti-spam capabilities on UC's e-mail systems through implementation of several spam detection devices.
We are pleased to announce UCit's implementation of Mirapoint's Rapid Anti-Spam solution. This industry-leading technology continuously utilizes information gathered through global network probes to identify and block spam and virus outbreaks in real-time. Rapid Anti-Spam is equally effective against spam, fraud, phishing, and malware. Rather than evaluating each individual message, Rapid Anti-Spam analyzes large volumes of Internet traffic in real-time and identifies outbreaks as soon as they emerge, which results in instant protection. Our recent installation of Rapid Anti-Spam has resulted in a dramatic increase in spam protection. More than 50 percent of all messages destined for UC are confirmed as spam and dropped before they reach individual email boxes.
This solution also allows the email user to identify and remove additional spam that Rapid Anti-Spam can't identify as confirmed spam. Rapid Anti-Spam scores each email message sent to the institution and tags it with a code designating it as potential spam. Email users have the option to identify and remove additional potential spam from their mailboxes by setting up filters to move specified tagged messages to junk mail folders for review. This feature protects the privacy of your communications and allows you to determine what is and isn't spam. By using filters in combination with all the spam detection devices that UCit has installed, you can eliminate up to 97% of spam from your mailbox.
