Student IT Guide and Planner is Right on Time

UCit Directory Services is responsible for producing the faculty/staff and student directories. Traditionally, the student directory was delivered to campus during Thanksgiving week in November, due to issues associated with acquiring the student names for the book. In other words, technology had not caught up with our needs. Students need information in September; not providing it until the end of November was clearly unacceptable. We sought to provide a student product that could be delivered at the start of school.
Last year, I visited several committees to advise them we were not going to print directories in the future. One of the committees I visited was QSI (Quality Service Initiative). The student representative on that committee told me that no one used the paper directory for students, but rather the online version of it. As a result, there was no printed student directory last year. Instead, we printed a trifold handout containing information about how to access telephone services and a quick phone list. In two hours, we distributed 7,000 copies to students living on campus. This reduced phone calls for routine information by 40%.

That's when we conceived the idea of providing information on the many IT services provided by UCit, and have that product ready for the students when they arrived on campus. It was a busy summer for the staff of Directory Services, but we managed to get the job done!
On Friday, September 16th, we accepted delivery of 5,000 books for students living on campus. All 5,000 were gone by the end of day. The balance of the books will be delivered Wednesday, September 21st. They will be available at Steger Student Life Computer Lab (room 630), McMicken Computer Lab (room 31), and Steger Student Life Center (room 500).
