ECSS Offers Equipment Repair
and Preventative Maintenance Service

by Daren Porter

Electronic Classroom Support Services (ECSS) is now offering equipment repair and preventative maintenance services for the UC community.  Instead of sending your equipment to the manufacturer or a repair shop, you can have your equipment serviced in-house by certified staff of ECSS. Examples of the types of equipment ECSS can service include the following:

LCD Projectors
Switchers
DVD Players
Scalers
VCRs (regular or professional)
Remote Controls
Monitors (CRT and LCD)
Document Cameras
Overhead Projectors
Televisions

Claudio Iacucci and his EET co-op student, Ryan Jackson, from the College of Applied Science, perform the repair work.  Both have multiple certifications in electronics service.  In the three years since repairs have been available in-house, almost none of the equipment repair labor has been done by outside vendors. For example, ECSS has become an authorized Sharp repair shop, which allows in-house service of the many Sharp components installed in classrooms. The university has seen cost savings and a reduction in turnover time, since one no longer needs to wait for shipping, or for another vendoršs schedule.

In addition to repairing malfunctioning equipment, ECSS also offers preventative maintenance services for classroom equipment installed in department-owned classrooms. Service includes a quarterly cleaning, testing, and adjustment of workstations and equipment.  Technicians clean surfaces, screens, and components, replace projector fan filters, adjust, align and test equipment.  ECSS will also remove components requiring more significant repair, and perform the service if requested.

To date, the preventative maintenance service has been utilized by the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering.  Repair services have been employed by DAAP, the College of Business, Engineering, A&S, Raymond Walters, and the College of Pharmacy.

If you think your department would benefit from these services, contact Jane Combs at 556-1907 to make arrangements.  The base rate for repair is $44 per hour, and preventative maintenance costs vary, depending on the type and number of items under contract.
