What is spyware? There is no formal definition, but according to Gartner, spyware is generally considered to be any software that relays private information to a third party without proper authorization. Also according to Gartner - see Document ID Number: G00129655; published 6 July 2005 - a more accurate description would include the following classification of exploits:
- Adware --- Software that runs targeted advertisements on a PC. This type of program often monitors web surfing patterns to target ads to users. Some anti-spyware programs also consider shared cookies to be adware.
- Spyware --- Keystroke logging and screen capture software that records a user session for later reconstruction.
- Dialer --- A program that permanently changes dial-up Internet service provider numbers to expensive toll numbers.
- Hacking tools --- Programs, such as Trojans or password crackers, which can be used to hack into other systems.
Spyware can cause many problems for your computer system. This product will help maintain the health of your computer system and it works with and compliments your current anti-virus software.
The site license covers faculty, staff, and students' systems. You can download the Anti-Spyware module and stand alone products.
