UCID Replaces SSN as Key Identifier
by Pat Krekeler
As part of a continuing effort by the University to protect the personal information of its students, faculty, and staff, UCit and its business partners have completed a large, complex project removing the social security number as a key identifier in the student information systems, and replacing it with the "UCID." Planning for the project spanned many years due to its complexity. Many departments and colleges that receive data from the student information systems used the SSN in their local applications. Therefore, many of these non-core systems also required conversions.
Wherever possible, we've implemented a Central Login Service (CLS) to replace an SSN log-in. The University username (often called "6+2") is used within the CLS. Now, a username with a personal password are the credentials one uses to log into most online services.
On the weekend of August 19th, UCit and its business partners worked around the clock to execute the conversion of the student information systems. UCit appreciates the dedication of its staff and business partners for the many months of hard work and long hours to complete this project. Without the cooperation and collaboration with its business partners this would not have been possible.
