UC Network Refreshed

by Barb Renner

The university’s data Network Refresh began in the residence halls on the first day of winter break, December 11th, and concluded in University Hall, on April 13th. A core team of network and field operations technicians refreshed eight hundred edge switches in ninety buildings on main campus, the College of Applied Sciences, and remote locations. Coordinating and communicating the Refresh activities with each department’s IT system administrator allowed us to accomplish this project with minimal disruption to users. Support and cooperation the IT system administrators gave UCit was also key to the project’s success.

The original Cisco network edge equipment was reaching its seventh year in production and the devices had reached the EOL (end of life) support from the vendor. The new edge equipment now enables the university’s network to keep pace with ever changing network security concerns, provides power through the switch ports to support wireless access points, and positions the network to support future VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services that could be deployed.

We thank the university community for contributing to the success of the university’s Network Refresh project.
