Corporate Partners Sponsor UC Mobile
Student Programming Competition

by Mark Faulkner

Microsoft, Cisco Systems, Cincinnati Bell, NuSoft, and UC Mobile are sponsoring a programming competition to provide opportunity and incentive for our students to design and develop creative applications for the mobile environment. Students in the College of Applied Science (Information Technology), College of Business (Information Systems), and College of Engineering (Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science) will have the opportunity to participate in the competition over the FY08 school year. Applied Science and Engineering intend to offer the opportunity as part of their senior design program and the College of Business is investigating the potential to incorporate it into a project course.

The student competition will occur over fall, winter, and spring, with prizes awarded to the winners at the end of spring quarter. However, you can participate right now – until 1 September 2007  – in the IDEA competition phase.

Anyone may submit a mobile idea using the mobile contest entry form. Each contributor of the top ten ideas, as determined by our Sponsor Panel, will win a $100 American Express gift card. In the fall, we will give these winning ideas to the student participants to select from when creating their mobile applications.

In the fall quarter, students will develop design briefs. In the winter quarter, students will produce prototypes of the applications, based on selected design briefs. Finally, in the spring quarter, students will deliver production mobile applications.

During the prototype and development phases, sponsors will provide students a mobile development environment, mobile handsets, and limited technical support. With participating faculty, we are still developing competition details. Prizes under discussion range from Zunes, Xbox 360s, and cash, to interviews at Microsoft and Cisco corporate headquarters for internship positions within the companies.

Stay tuned to UCit now as the details unfold for this exciting competition!
