UC Mobile and Uptown Wireless Continue Growth

by Diana Noelcke

It has been a busy spring for everyone involved with the UC Mobile project. In early March, we began preparations to participate in our second student orientation. Meeting together with Admissions, marketing staff, and SOLs (student orientation leaders) we discussed what did or did not work last year as the starting point for defining what we're doing now.

With the new "Free Housing Cell Phone" program rolling out in Fall 2007, new rate plans, marketing collateral requiring change, working out details on how to distribute 3,400 cell phones during move-in weekend, along with how to allow pre-registration during the summer, we added many tasks to the UC Mobile 'To Do' list.

Also, UC Mobile is partnering with Microsoft, Cisco, NuSoft, and Cincinnati Bell in a mobile application contest.

Uptown wireless has also been making progress over the past quarter. We are the second highest traffic area for Cincinnati Bell "hot spots" in the region. Please see the press release of early June.

Almost all of the 600 access points on campus have access to Uptown wireless service. This meets a need that we have had for a number of years:  access to the Internet for guest and visitors to campus. Visit http://www.uc.edu/ucmobile for more details on how to access Uptown wireless - and to learn about the new corporate and personal rate plans that are now available.
