Network Refresh Project Underway

by Barb Renner

To keep pace with the University of Cincinnati’s needs, and maintain vendor support, UCit is preparing to refresh the data network. We usually replace aging network equipment about every five years, and the current network edge switches are now six years old. Vendor support on the equipment software ended in 2005 and hardware support will end in 2007.

We will also replace all the network switches, installed in all the network closets, in every building on main campus and the College of Applied Science. This “network refresh” should be transparent; however, you will experience a downtime of approximately one to two hours while we replace the equipment that services your floor. (We will be replacing the equipment between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.)

About four weeks before each scheduled building conversion, UCit will contact or meet with the department system administrators or department business managers (as appropriate, to review the building schedule and discuss special needs.

Please visit http://www.uc.edu/ucit/network_refresh/ to see when your building is scheduled for refreshment, or for answers to most common questions. If you have additional questions, please contact  Barb Renner at 556-9898 or Dan Drury at 556-1234.
