Information Security Awareness 2008-'09
by Quinn Shamblin
People are only beginning to understand information security. We, as a society, have only in the past few years become aware of identity theft and of the importance of protecting critical information like our social security numbers. As computers have become ubiquitous, so have the problems of spam, phishing, malware, and other threats to your computer and your private information.
UC understands the importance of information security. The Information Security department at UC hosts events, and provides services and learning opportunities throughout the year to help you become more familiar with what is out there and what you can do to protect yourself. Events include the following:
- Every few days, the Information Security team puts together an update to inform people of what is happening in the world and in higher education with respect to information security. This update is consistently the most popular item on the InfoSec web site and can be accessed directly from the InfoSec home page at http://www.uc.edu/infosec/. You can even sign up on a LISTSERV to have the update sent to you automatically when a new one is available.
- Monthly, InfoSec hosts a one hour brown bag presentation during lunch time, once on east campus and once on west. These presentations cover a broad variety of topics such as: : Phishing & Identity Theft, Shopping Safely during the Holidays (i.e., Scams, Physical Safety, ID Theft), Protecting Your Privacy & Personal Data (encryption and passwords), Social Engineering, "Mad Hacker: A Trip into Wonderland."
- Each quarter, the Director of Information Security hosts a one hour meeting to discuss the current state of information security at UC. Topics include current and future initiatives, events, and what is going on both at UC and in the industry
- An information security awareness week occurs In October. There will be a presentation, lab sessions and awareness materials.
- InfoSec personnel are available to provide training to any organization or group on campus on any InfoSec topic. Contact our offices at 558-ISec or infosec@uc.edu to make arrangements.
