Blu-ray vs. HD DVD Format War Continues into 2008
by Mary J. Clark
This month, Blu-ray may have won a decisive battle in the war for supremacy in high definition DVD technology. Warner Brothers Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing their high-definition DVDs exclusively in the Blu-ray format after May of this year.
Blu-ray is named for the short-wavelength, blue-violet (blu-) optical laser (ray) used to read and write data with this technology. The Blu-ray Disc (BD) Association is composed of more than 180 member companies, including such notables as Apple, Dell, Hewlett Packard, Sun, and Walt Disney Pictures. HD DVD - a red laser format - is not quite ready to wave the white flag, but the "general consensus" among the technical set seems to be that with its larger storage capacity, Blu-ray will probably triumph - and sooner rather than later.
We anticipate manufacturers to start making BD-ROM (Blu-ray Disc read only memory), BD-R (recordable), and BD-RE (rewritable) drives available in new PCs soon. Blu-ray very well may be the next generation optical disc format for PC data storage.
